The Short Story:Â James Madison jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held off a late rally to defeat the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team, 9-6, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night at North Carolina. Â
Â
How it Happened
• Taylor Marchetti struck first when she came from behind the cage and scored on a low shot at 24:15 to give the Dukes the early lead. Brittany Bill followed with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart and James Madison led 3-0 with 14:35 to go in the first half.
• Graduate student
Lexi Souder got the Blue Jays on the board when she took a pass from senior
Aurora Cordingely and scored on a quick-shot from the left alley at the 12:11-mark. Charlotte Haggerty answered with a pair of goals just 70 seconds apart, followed by a strike from Daria Lucchesi and JMU led 6-1 with 8:43 to play.
• Freshman
Abbey Hurlbrink halted the Dukes' run when she picked the bottom left corner from the doorstep off a feed from Cordingley at 7:37.
• Haggerty opened the second-half scoring with a free position goal to push JMU's lead to 7-2. Hopkins answered when freshman
Eliza Bowman got free in the right alley and blew one past Molly Dougherty at 16:22. Haggerty and Katelyn Morgan added two more over a nearly nine-minute span and the lead was 9-3 with 5:03 to go.
• Cordingley got things going late for the Blue Jays, scoring back-to-back goals just 55 seconds apart to cut the deficit to four. Senior
Shelby Harrison then converted a free position shot and it was 9-6 with 29 ticks on the clock, but that's as close as Hopkins could get. Â Â
