How it Happened
• Iona grabbed a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and pushed its lead to 4-2 with 4:26 to go in the second. Senior Emerson Sullivan scored with 2:05 to go in the quarter to cut the deficit in half, but the Gaels answered with 54 ticks on the clock. Sullivan responded with his second of the game just 20 seconds later to make it a 5-4 game at the half.
• Sophomore Cameron Burns opened the third quarter scoring and tied the game at five-all. Iona answered to go back up 6-5, but back-to-back goals by Sullivan and junior Chris Freese gave Hopkins its first lead with 4:34 to go in the quarter.
• The Gaels then sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from senior Jake Pearson and it was 8-8 with 2:34 to play. Iona tacked on two more goals in the final 85 seconds to take a 10-8 lead into the fourth. The Gaels struck first in the fourth to push their lead to three. But the Blue Jays answered, scoring three straight in less than two minutes to knot the score at 11. And that's how regulation would end
• Sullivan scored early in the first overtime period to put Hopkins up 12-11. Just 22 seconds into the second overtime, sophomore Seth Berke pushed the lead to 13-11. Iona answered to cut JHU's lead in half but another Sullivan goal staked Hopkins to a 14-12 lead with 1:15 to play. The Gaels would force a third, sudden death overtime, with a pair of goals in the final 55 seconds. Luksa Vlasic then ended it for the Gaels with 1:35 to go in the third overtime.
