The Short Story: The second-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team got second-half goals from
Rachel Jackson and
Riley O'Toole to hold off 17
th-ranked Carnegie Mellon at Homewood Field.
How it Happened
• The opening 45 minutes solved nothing as neither team could find the back of the net. The Tartans outshot the Blue Jays 7-0 in the opening 45 minutes and had several dangerous chances, but Blue Jay goalie
Caitlin Hendricks had two saves and CMU's best offering, a 20-yard rip from
Breana Valentovish, whistled just wide.
• The scoreless tie lasted just over five minutes into the second half before Blue Jay freshman
Katie Sullivan collected a loose ball on the wing, drove deep on the side and slid a hard cross through the box that Jackson was able to get a foot on and poke into an open net and give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead in the 51
st minute.
• The one-goal lead was short-lived as the Tartans got the equalizer less than two minutes later off a corner kick.Â
Sarah Scoles drove the corner high into the top of the area, where
Rachel Legg was able to control the ball and rip one home through traffic to draw CMU even.
• The teams battled evenly for the next 13-plus minutes before the Blue Jays got what proved to be the game-winning from O'Toole. Taking a free kick approximately 22 yards from the goal and to the right of CMU goalie
Carolyn Botz, O'Toole sent a rocket just under the crossbar to make it 2-1.
What it Means
• The Blue Jays improve to 7-0-1 on the year and 8-1-1 all-time against the Tartans. Six of the eight all-time meetings that haven't ended in a tie have been one-goal games.
• Carnegie Mellon slips to 7-2 on the year with both losses coming on the road by a one goal.
Inside the Box Score
• CMU held a 16-4 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corners.
• Hendricks posted six saves and allowed the one goal. That was the first non-penalty kick goal the Blue Jays have allowed this season.
Up Next
• Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, October 6 when the Blue Jays travel to Gettysburg for a Centennial Conference match (7 pm).
