The Short Story: The top-ranked Johns Hopkins volleyball team ran its season-opening winning streak to 11 and its overall winning streak to 46 with another Centennial sweep on Wednesday evening.
How it Happened
SET ONE
• Johns Hopkins came out hot, earning the first five points against Dickinson.
Lauren Anthony and
Simone Bliss registered kills before three straight attack errors from the Red Devils.
• The Red Devils went on a 3-0 run to cut it to 7-4, but Hopkins picked up the next two points on a Dickinson attack error and a kill from
Sydney Portale.
• Dickinson cut the deficit to 12-10, but Hopkins earned seven of the next nine points, getting kills from three different Blue Jays, a duo block from
Natalie Aston and
Eleni Panagopoulos, and an ace from Anthony.
• Leading 19-13, Aston took service and led the Jays to six straight points to end the set, culminating with a Portale kill to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead.
SET TWO
• The Red Devils made it interesting for a bit longer in set two before succumbing to a 25-17 set defeat to JHU. Hopkins once again one the first three points of the set, but after a Morgan Biggs kill, an Elise Butler ace and a Blue Jay error, Dickinson tied the set at 6-6. Portale and Anthony responded with kills for JHU, but the Red Devils took the next two points.
• Leading 11-10,
Danielle Norman rocketed a kill home for JHU, followed by a Red Devil attack error and an Anthony ace. With a 17-14 advantage, JHU ripped off four straight to put the set out of reach.
Elayna Williams and Portale put down kills for JHU and
Sarah Khan added an ace to extend the lead to seven.
• Anthony picked up the final two kills of the set to put Hopkins up 2-0.
SET THREE
• JHU wasted no time in set three, once again jumping out early, this time to a 6-0 advantage. Aston totaled three aces while Norman picked up a pair of kills and the Jays were on their way to another three-set victory.
• Dickinson chopped the deficit down to 9-5, but another four-point run for Hopkins took the spirit from the Red Devils. Kills from Norman put JHU up 17-9 and 20-9 before Portale finally ended things at 25-13.
What it Means
• Johns Hopkins' 46-match winning streak is the fourth-longest winning streak in Division III history.
• The Blue Jays have won 48 consecutive sets against Centennial Conference opponents dating back to October 27, 2018, when they dropped the fifth set in a five-set loss at Franklin & Marshall.
Inside the Box Score
• For the second straight game, JHU held its opponent to a negative hitting percentage. Dickinson never crossed .000 in a single set, hitting a game best -0.033 in the first set. The Red Devils totaled 18 kills and 23 errors in the match.
• The Jays hit .274 for the match, totaling 37 kills and 14 errors. Putting the Red Devils away comfortably in the third set, Hopkins hit .321.
• Sophomore
Danielle Norman totaled a career-best 11 kills in the match while graduate
Sydney Portale picked up 10. Hopkins had 10 service aces in the contest.
