Blue Jays, Diplomats Close First Half of Season at Homewood Field

The Game
«  Johns Hopkins (4-0, 3-0 CC) welcomes Franklin & Marshall (1-3, 1-2 CC) to Homewood Field for the final game before the league-wide bye week on Oct. 8-9.

A Look Back
«  Johns Hopkins improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial with a 54-6 win at Moravian last Saturday.
« F&M fell at Ursinus, 28-0, last Saturday.

The Facts
«  This is the 136th season of Johns Hopkins football.  JHU first fielded a team in 1882.
«  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 567-487-58 (.536).
«  Since the start of the 2010 season, the Blue Jays are 104-17 (.860) overall and 85-8 (.914) in the Centennial Conference.
«  Overall, JHU owns 14 Centennial Conference titles (all won since 2002) and has qualified for the NCAA Playoffs 10 times (all since 2005).

Poll Position
« Johns Hopkins continues to inch up in the national rankings as the Blue Jays are in the top 15 in both the AFCA (14th) and D3football.com (15th) polls this week.
« Johns Hopkins was listed as receiving votes in the D3football.com preseason poll, but jumped to #25 in the first in-season poll (Sept. 5) and has steadily moved up to 21st, 18th and now 15th.
« Since the AFCA Poll debuted in 1999, this week's #14 ranking marks the 102nd time JHU has been ranked in the top 25.  More recently, the Blue Jays are in the top 25 for the 84th time in the last 92 polls dating back to 2011.
«  Since the D3football.com Poll debuted in 2003, this week's #15 ranking marks the 115th time Johns Hopkins has appeared in the top 25.

Scoring Surge
« Johns Hopkins has scored 233 points in its first four games of the 2021 season.  That's the most points JHU has scored in any four-game span in school history.
« Dating back to the 2019 season, JHU has scored at least 42 points in seven straight games, 49 or more in five straight and 50 or more in five of the last seven.
« In 16 quarters this season, the Blue Jays have scored 10 or more points in 10 of the 16 and 20 or more in six of 16.
« JHU has scored 98 points in the second quarter and has yet to allow a third-quarter point.
« Johns Hopkins currently ranks second in the nation in scoring offense at 58.2 points per game.

Scoring in All Three Phases
«  Johns Hopkins got two defensive touchdowns and had two kickoff returns for touchdowns in last week's win at Moravian.  Add in a safety recorded by the defense, and 26 of JHU's 54 points did not come from the offense.
« The last time JHU scored in all three phases (offense-defense-special teams) was in the 2018 season opener against Randolph-Macon.
« The last time Johns Hopkins scored twice on defense in a game was on September 10, 2011, when the Jays returned two INTs for TDs.

That's a Record
«  Senior Harrison Wellmann set a Johns Hopkins record and tied a Division III national record with two kickoff returns for touchdowns in last week's win at Moravian.
« Wellmann's kickoff returns for scores covered 90 and 73 yards and he was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his efforts.

Schuermann Honored
«  Sophomore defensive lineman Luke Schuermann grabbed the first Centennial Conference honor of his career as he was named the CC's Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts last week at Moravian.
« Schuermann posted five tackles, including three tackles for losses and two sacks, in the victory.  On one of his sacks, he forced a fumble that was scooped up by senior Nick DiFiore and returned 44 yards for a touchdown.

Quite a Run - Part I
« Johns Hopkins was tied with Ursinus at 14-14 with six minutes remaining in the second quarter of its game against the Bears on September 11.
« Since then, over a span of 10 quarters and six minutes, the Blue Jays have outscored the opposition 166-13.

Quite a Run - Part II
« Since allowing touchdowns on two of the first three drives against Ursinus, the Blue Jay defense  has been more than just a little stingy.  Consider ...
• JHU has not allowed a touchdown in 42 consecutive possessions dating back to the second quarter against Ursinus.
• The Blue Jays have allowed just two field goals in the last 42 opponent possessions.  The lone TD allowed during the last 10 quarters came when Ursinus recovered a fumbled Blue Jay punt in the end zone.
• The last 42 opponent possessions have ended with 1 safety, 2 field goals, 3 interceptions, 5 fumbles lost, 5 turnovers on downs and 22 punts ... four others ended with the conclusion of either the second or fourth quarter.

Before The Bye
«  This week's game against F&M will be the last game for the Blue Jays before their bye week.  After the game against the Diplomats, the Blue Jays will return to action on Friday, October 15 when JHU visits Muhlenberg.
«  Dating back to 2011, the Blue Jays are 44-3 in games played before their bye.
«  The Centennial Conference went to the league-wide bye in the middle of the season in 2011.

Oktoberfest
«  Johns Hopkins flips the calendar to October for this week's game against F&M - and the month has been good to the Blue Jays of late.
«  The Blue Jays enter this week's game against the Diplomats having won 31 of their last 32 games in the month of October dating back 2010.  The lone loss came in 2019, when F&M topped the Blue Jays, 20-17, at Homewood Field (10-19-19).
«  Ironically, the Blue Jays had been just 10-8 in their previous 18 games in the month of October before jump-starting the current 32-game run with a 49-24 win at Susquehanna (10-23-2010).

Close Calls
«  Since the start of the 2013 season, Johns Hopkins has lost a total of 11 games.  Those 11 losses have come by a total of 56 points with setbacks by five, three, five, seven, four, three, two, eight, one, three and 15 points.  Translation, 10 of Johns Hopkins' 11 losses since the start of the 2013 season have come by a touchdown or less.  The 31-16 loss to Muhlenberg (Nov. 2, 2019) marked the first time JHU had lost a regular season game by more than nine points in more than 10 years (2009 season opener at Delaware Valley).

On a Roll
«  Johns Hopkins is 92-6 in its last 98 regular season games dating back to late in the 2010 season.
«  The Blue Jays are 101-14 in their last 115 games overall since late in the 2010 season.
«  Dating back farther, Johns Hopkins is 167-42 (.799) since the start of the 2002 season, 173-45 (.794) since the start of the 2001 season and 178-50 (.781) since the start of the 2000 season.

At Home at Homewood
«  Since the start of the 2010 season, the Blue Jays are 54-7 (.885) at Homewood Field.
«  Johns Hopkins had won 12 consecutive games at Homewood Field before the loss on September 14, 2019 against Susquehanna.  This is tied for the longest home winning streak in school history.  JHU previously won 12 straight games at home from 2014-15.
