How it Happened

The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays hit the road on Saturday afternoon, defeating Swarthmore 56-48 to win its 11th straight contest. Diarra Oden and Emily Howie combined for 32 to lead the Jays to victory.

Hopkins took an early lead, but held just a 17-16 lead after an exciting first 10 minutes in Tarble Pavilion. Oden hit a three to start the contest and scored nine of her 19 points in the first 10 minutes. An Oden layup with 6:23 to go in the first quarter put the Jays up 10-4. Dana Bandurick answered with her first basket on the other end, but it was Oden again. Oden's layup with 5:17 remaining gave her nine points in less than five minutes. With 2:33 to play, Christine Corpuz drilled a triple to give the Jays a 15-7 lead. Kim Kockenmeister split her free throws and Michaela O'Neil hit her first shot of the game to give the Jays their biggest lead of the quarter, 17-8. Swarthmore scored eight straight, including a three from Alyssa Hayashi with four seconds left to cut it to 17-16.

After trailing for nearly all of the first, the Garnet tied it at 18-18 1:20 into the second period. With 7:11 to go in the half, Jadyn Murray split her free throws, but put Hopkins back in the lead. Oden scored on a layup after a Greta Miller offensive rebound and the Jays lead was back up to three. After the Garnet cut it to one, Howie hit a three and Oden knocked down a free throw to give Hopkins a 25-20 lead with 4:24 left. With 2:40 remaining in the half, Oden hit her second three of the contest to give JHU a 28-23 lead. Oden made it 17 points for the half with a jumper with less than 90 seconds remaining, helping to clear some separation and sending Hopkins to half with a five-point advantage.

Johns Hopkins used the third quarter to build a double-digit lead over the Garnet, entering the fourth with a 45-32 lead. With 6:57 on the third quarter clock, Howie hit a jumper to make it 34-27. Howie would go on to score eight more points in the period. Howie hit threes with 4:34 and 2:23 on the clock to push the Jays lead to 40-29. With 1:47 to play, Maya Johnson joined in on the scoring action, hitting a three to make it three straight three-point baskets for the Jays. Howie hit her final bucket of the period with less than five seconds on the clock and the Jays lead was 13.

Oden scored her final bucket of the game with 8:58 remaining, giving her 19 for the contest and pushing the lead back to 13. After four points from Erin Walsh, Corpuz hit her second triple of the game, putting Hopkins ahead 54-37 with 7:02 remaining. Walsh scored the final points of the contest for Hopkins with 4:15 left, putting Hopkins ahead by 16, helping the Jays secure an 11th-straight win.

What it Means
• The all-time series now favors the Blue Jays 45-12. The Jays have now won three straight against Swarthmore.

• Not to be a broken record, but the win streak continues! Katherine Bixby's squad has now won 11 straight games, leaving them one shy of tying the JHU program record set over 20 years ago.

• Hopkins has a three-game advantage on Haverford in the loss column for second-place in the Centennial Conference at 12-1. The teams will meet next Saturday in Goldfarb.

Inside the Box Score
•  The first quarter continues to be the best offensive quarter for the Jays. Coming into today, the 295 points scored were the most points scored in a quarter for Hopkins by over 40 points. They added 17 more today, the most they scored in any of the four quarters,

•  Oden continues to stick right around her season average in scoring as she added another 19 points this afternoon. She surpassed 900 career points earlier this month and continues to work towards 1,000.

• After multiple games flirting with 10 rebounds, Greta Miller finally completed her first career double digit rebound game. The freshman continues to stuff the stat sheet as she had three points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

• The nation leaders in scoring defense held their opponents below 50 once again. The Jays number of 45.8 points allowed per game will rise just slightly, but it was another dominant defensive effort for Bixby's unit.

• Johns Hopkins grabbed 52 rebounds in the contest, outrebounding the Garnet by 19. This is the fifth game this season with more than 50 rebounds for JHU.

Up Next
• The Jays will take on McDaniel on Tuesday night in Westminster, MD.
