CLAREMONT, CA – The Johns Hopkins water polo team closed out the annual Gary Troyer Tournament with a pair of tough losses to second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and eighth-ranked Redlands Saturday. Graduate student
Emerson Sullivan scored his 200
th career goal in the first game of the day.
The Stags jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game's opening 4:06, but a
Chris Freese goal at 3:23 sparked a four-goal Blue Jay run. Sullivan scored the last two goals that saw Hopkins take a 4-3 lead early in the second.
Back-to-back goals by Gavin Rosser and Luke Weigle gave the home team back the lead at 5-4 with 2:36 left in the second. Junior
Paul Gensbigler tied the game at five just over a minute later, but Weigler and Auggie Aliaga answered with a pair to grab the lead back for the Stags. Junior
Cameron Burns scored just after the expiration of a six-on-five, to pull the Blue Jays back within one.
The teams traded goals over a 64-second span and CMS led 9-8. Ben Weldon and Weigle responded with two for the Stags and the lead was three with 7:40 to go in the game. Sullivan and junior
Liam Housenbold sandwiched a pair around a Cristian Pang goal and it was 12-10 midway through the fourth. The Stags had the final say however, scoring twice in the final four minutes to secure the 14-10 win.
Redlands scored the first two goals of the game before a Sullivan strike at the 6:40-mark of the second. The Bulldogs answered with four straight to go up 6-1 midway through the third quarter. Sullivan ended the run with his second of the game with 3:50 to play. Once again Redlands responded, scoring four unanswered in a two-minute span to push out to a 10-2 lead.
Sullivan once again ended the run, scoring at 5:02 in the fourth. Alec Abrahamian scored three minutes later to stake Redlands to an 11-3 lead before
Quint Steffey goal with eight ticks on the clock.
Hopkins returns to action and finally plays its first home game of the season on Wednesday, October 5. JHU will host Mount St. Mary's in MAWPC action in the Newton White Aquatic Center.
