BALTIMORE, MD – The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team scored twice in each half and got two goals from graduate student
Rebecca Rosen to fuel a 4-1 win over visiting McDaniel in a Centennial Conference showdown at Homewood Field Wednesday evening. The Blue Jays improve to 10-0-2 overall and 6-0 in the Centennial with the win, while the Green Terror slip to 6-3-4 overall and 4-1-2 in the CC.
Â
The Blue Jays needed just under nine minutes to break through and grab a 1-0 lead. Freshmen
Lily Gaston and
Megha Salvi worked a perfect give-and-go that sprung Salvi down the wing to the left of McDaniel
Katherine Carstensen. Salvi crossed a low ball to the front of the goal that got caught in traffic just in front of Carstensen, who couldn't get to it before
Breukelen Woodard collected it and slotted her ninth goal of the season inside the post to stake the Blue Jays to an early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Green Terror answered in the 23
rd minute when sophomore
Olivia Moskunas forced a Blue Jay turnover 30 yards from the goal, dribbled down the flank and fired one high to the far post that Johns Hopkins goalie
Emma Huntzinger was defenseless to save. The goal snapped a streak of more than 690 minutes without allowing a goal for the Blue Jays.
Â
Johns Hopkins struck again late in the first half to grab a 2-1 halftime lead as Gaston played a corner kick into the middle of the box and graduate student Rosen headed it just under the crossbar to give the Blue Jays a one-goal lead at the half.
Â
The Blue Jays then put the game away with two goals in a span of less than three minutes midway through the second half. Sophomore
Katie Sullivan collected a feed from Gaston to the left of Carstensen, pulled the trigger with her left foot and snuck one inside the near post in the 62
nd minute and Rosen completed her two-goal effort in the 64
th minute when she headed home a free kick from
Kendall Dandridge to close out the scoring.
Â
The Blue Jays held a 27-7 advantage in shots and took five of the six corners in the game. Carstensen posted seven saves in goal for the Green Terror, while Huntzinger made two saves for Johns Hopkins.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 15 when the Blue Jays welcome Ursinus to Homewood Field (4 pm). The Blue Jays will honor their seniors prior to Saturday's game against the Bears.
