Hopkins Sweeps Past McDaniel, Improves to 7-0 in Centennial

Norman Paces Blue Jays with 10 Kills

WESTMINSTER, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team picked up its third consecutive sweep and won for the sixth time in seven matches with a 3-0 victory over host McDaniel (25-20, 25-13, 25-21) at the Gill Center Wednesday night.  The Blue Jays improve to 12-7 overall and 7-0 in the Centennial Conference with tonight's victory.

The Blue Jays grabbed a 25-20 win in set one as they scored 10 of the last 14 points to earn the set victory.  After jumping out to an early 6-2 lead, the Blue Jays saw the Green Terror battle back and take their first lead at 15-14.  After the teams traded points, the Blue Jays got a Simone Adam kill to jump-start the set-ending spree.  Alice Yu and Danielle Norman both collected two kills during the 10-4 run to end the set for the Blue Jays.

A far less dramatic second set saw the Blue Jays use a six-point run to turn a 5-5 tie into an 11-5 lead that was never seriously threatened.  Back-to-back kills from Norman and four Green Terror attack errors fueled the 6-0 run.  The Blue Jays pushed the lead out to 18-6 lead as Norman added two additional kills to cap a 7-0 run after McDaniel had trimmed the 11-5 deficit to 11-6; the Terror were never close than eight the rest of the way as the Blue Jays took the set 25-13.

Hopkins closed out the victory with a 25-21 win in set three.  After battling evenly early in the set, the Green Terror grabbed a 14-11 lead after a Nia Roberts kill and a bad set for the Blue Jays.  Hopkins responded with a five-point run to grab a 16-14 lead, but McDaniel answered with a five-point run of its own to go up 19-16.  From there, the Blue Jays would score nine of the last 11 points to grab the 25-21 win.  Hopkins got four kills down the stretch, including two from Norman, to seal the victory.

Norman had a team and match-high 10 kills, while Chidinma Onukwugha (7 kills), Adam (5) and Yu (5) helped lead a balanced offensive attack for the Blue Jays.  Onukwugha was also in on eight blocks and Helena Swaak collected 28 assists in the victory.

Allyson Burgee and Mackenzie Mitchell both had seven kills for the Green Terror, but McDaniel (1-14, 0-6 CC) got just seven other kills and was limited to an attack percentage of just .021 in the loss.
