Coleman Goal Lifts Johns Hopkins Over Goucher

TOWSON, MD – The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team rode a Scotty Coleman goal to a 1-0 win over host Goucher Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Blue Jays had several good chances in the first half but couldn't break through. Freshman Will Andrus volleyed a shot from 15 yards out off a corner, but Jeff Castro made the save in the 19th minute. Just a few minutes later, junior Francis Meyer weaved through the Gopher defense, but pushed his shot just wide right.

In the 28th minute, sophomore Will Sangpachatanaruk nearly capitalized on Castro being way off his line and chipped a long ball over the goalie. The ball looked destined for the goal, but a defender was able to clear it out at the last second. The Blue Jays had two great looks in final minute of the half, but Castro made a nice stop on a Meyer shot and then Coleman missed high off the rebound.

Hopkins needed just three minutes and eight seconds to get on the board in the second half. Freshman Giulian Laudisa fired a shot from about 14 yards out and Coleman, with his back to the goal, flicked it over Gopher goalie Gavin Pennell. Junior Tyler White nearly added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute with his left-footed shot from 20 yards out, but Pennell made a diving save at the post.

Graduate student Alex Morgret posted the clean sheet without being forced to make a save. Castro finished with four saves in the first half while Pennell made three in the second. Hopkins had a 16-2 advantage in shots and a 2-0 edge in corners.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 8 as the Blue Jays visit the Washington College Shoremen. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.

Notes: Morgret extended his shutout streak to 844:41, now the second longest shutout streak in program history • The Blue Jays pushed their unbeaten streak to 11 games (9-0-2).
