CHESTERTOWN, MD – The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team ended in a 1-1 draw at Washington College Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays remain one of just two unbeaten teams in the conference.
Sophomore
Ian Whamond nearly gave the Blue Jays the lead in just the 14
th minute on a free kick about 22 yards out. But Anthony Pinto was able to stop his shot near the post. Just a few minutes later, junior
Francis Meyer ran onto a loose ball near the top of the box and fired a hard shot that was cleared out by the defense.
Some nice tic-tac-toe passing got Hopkins on the board in the 24
th minute. Meyer dribbled up the middle of the field before passing to sophomore
Jonathan Cui, who touched the ball to junior
Tyler White. He collected the ball and slipped a pass through a couple of defenders to senior
Axel Whamond on the outside. He sent a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Freshman
Javi Ordonez Jr. looked like he might slip another one past Pinto in the 39
th minute, but his low shot just skipped past the right post. Harrison Malone had a good look off a free kick for the Shoremen in the 65
th minute, but graduate student
Alex Morgret was able to corral the ball.
Washington College drew level when it was given a penalty kick with just 1:50 to play in the game. The Shoremen played a free kick into the box and Morgret punched the ball away but was whistled for a foul. Ben Strine then converted the penalty shot to make it a 1-1 game.
Hopkins had an 11-9 edge in shots while corners were even at one apiece. Morgret finished with two saves while Pinto made three for the Shoremen.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 12 as the Blue Jays visit the Salisbury Sea Gulls. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.
Notes: Morgret's shutout streak was snapped at 932:51, the second longest streak in program history • Hopkins runs its unbeaten streak to 12 games (9-0-3), the longest streak since 2004 when JHU was unbeaten in its first 19 games (17-0-2).
