Patrick Koenig had a great look early for the Blue Streaks, but his rocket in the third minute missed wide left. Sophomore
Diego Elias nearly put the Blue Jays on the board in the 11
th minute off a corner kick. But Jake Vogrin made a point-blank save to keep the teams level. Five minutes later, sophomore
Ian Whamond ended up with the ball and a seemingly open goal, but JCU defender Daniel Kalic cleared the ball off the line at the last minute.
Hopkins broke through in the 33
rd minute with the first of Coleman's two goals. The Blue Jays were pressuring deep in the Blue Streaks' end and Coleman stole the ball, dribbled around a sliding defender in the box and then slotted a low shot past Vogrin from six yards out.
The second half started similar to the first, with John Carroll have a great scoring chance early. Logan Penton took a rip in the 48
th minute, but again it went wide. In the 55
th minute, Koenig struck a free kick about 30 yards out but graduate student
Alex Morgret made the save. Coleman made it a two-goal game in the 67
th minute. Coleman forced a bad pass from the JCU defense and freshman
Jackson Shapiro stepped up to the loose ball and he sprung Coleman with a through pass. Coleman took the ball in stride and then beat Vogrin with a low shot to the left side of the goal.
Junior
Francis Meyer pushed the Blue Jays' lead to three and sealed the win in the 89
th minute. He took a pass in the midfield and beat several defenders up the middle of the field before beating Vorgin to his left.
Hopkins had a 16-5 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in corners. Morgret finished with a pair of saves to post his third straight shutout and 14
th on the season. Vogrin made three saves in the loss for the Blue Streaks.
Hopkins returns to action next weekend against Catholic in the NCAA Sweet 16. The date, time and location of the Blue Jays' next game are still to be determined.
