Johns Hopkins Dominates 2022 All-Centennial Football Team

Blue Jays Produce Offensive & Defensive Players, Rookie of the Year

LANCASTER, PA – The Johns Hopkins football team produced the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, the Rookie of the Year and landed 16 players on the 2022 All-Centennial Conference Football Team it was announced today.  This is the fourth time since 2009 that Johns Hopkins has produced the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in the same season and the third time since 2018 the Jays have landed the Rookie of the Year.  In all, Johns Hopkins placed 16 players on the 2022 All-Centennial Team with eight grabbing first team honors, six earning a spot on the second team and two landing honorable mention status.
 
In addition to JHU's 16 All-Centennial selections, junior Spencer Uggla was also named to the 2022 Centennial Conference Football All-Sportsmanship Team.
 
Schuermann Repeats as Defensive Player of Year
Junior Luke Schuermann repeated as the league's defensive player of the year and was also a repeat First Team All-Centennial selection.  He ranks seconds on the team in tackles (62) and leads the team in sacks (11) and tackles for loss (22).  His 22 TFLs are a Johns Hopkins single-season record, while his 11 sacks are tied for second.  He is the 10th Blue Jay to earn CC Defensive Player of the Year honors and the first to earn the award twice; overall, he is just the third player in league history to twice earn the award.
 
Stevens Grabs Offensive Player of the Year
Graduate student quarterback Ryan Stevens added his name to the list of Blue Jays who have earned Offensive Player of the Year with another standout season in 2022.  He is 218-of-309 for 2,387 yards with 32 touchdowns against just five interceptions through 10 games.  He is the Centennial-leading 10th Blue Jays to earn Offensive Player of the Year honors and was also named First Team All-Centennial.
 
Nwosu Named Rookie of the Year
Freshman offensive lineman Michael Nwosu becomes Johns Hopkins' third Centennial Rookie of the Year as he was selected after a standout campaign.  A starter in all 10 games thus far at guard, he has helped lead an offense that is averaging 45.4 points and 505.4 yards per game.  Also a Second Team All-Centennial selection, Nwosu is the third Johns Hopkins player in the last four seasons to grab Rookie of the Year honors as he joins Robert Fletcher (2018) and Luke Schuermann (2021).
 
Three Wide Receivers Grab All-Centennial Honors
Graduate student Quinn Revere (1st Team), senior Artie Collins (2nd Team) and graduate student Josh Polce (Honorable Mention) all landed a spot on the All-Centennial Team.  This is the second consecutive year that Johns Hopkins has had three wide receivers named to the team and the three this season boost JHU's all-time total to 40 All-Centennial receivers.
Revere currently ranks second on the team in receptions (48) and receiving yards (580) and leads the team and the Centennial Conference with 12 touchdown catches on the year, while Collins leads the team in receptions (61) and receiving yards (724) and has seven touchdown catches to his credit.
Polce made an immediate impact in his first season at Johns Hopkins as he has 34 receptions for 508 yards and nine touchdowns; he ranks second on the team in touchdown catches, third in yards and fourth in receptions.
 
Woods, Brophy Add to Offensive Line History
Senior JR Woods (T) and sophomore Garrett Brophy (G) added to Johns Hopkins' legendary haul of All-Centennial Conference Offensive Linemen as both earned first team honors.  Including the selection of Nwosu, Johns Hopkins has now produced 84 All-Centennial offensive linemen since the league was formed in 1983.  In addition, this is the eighth time since 2011 that Johns Hopkins has produced two or more first team selections from the offensive line.  Woods and Brophy are both making their second appearance on the team after Woods grabbed first team honors and Brophy second team a year ago.  Both have been key parts of a Blue Jay offense that is averaging 45.4 points and 505.4 yards per game.
 
Seidel, Andersson Close Careers With All-Centennial Nods
Graduate student defensive backs Nick Seidel and Ross Andersson added to their impressive haul of career achievements as Seidel earned first team honors while Andersson was a second team selection.  Seidel leads the team with four interceptions and has 40 tackles, 5.5 tackles for losses, 1.5 sacks and 3 pass breakups to his credit.  Anderson has 41 tackles and a team-high six pass breakups on the year from his safety position.
 
Linebackers Van Kouteren, Dubois Honored
The Blue Jays' two starting linebackers in their 4-2-5 alignment – graduate student Duncan Van Kouteren and senior Matt Dubois – both landed a spot on the All-Centennial Team with Van Kouteren grabbing first team honors and Dubois second team.
Van Kouteren leads the team in tackles with a career-high 74 and also has 5.5 tackles for losses, five pass breakups and one interception on the year, while Dubois ranks fifth on the team in tackles with 36 and has 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception and one forced fumble.
 
Turner Rounds Out First Team Honorees
Graduate student tight end Emmett Turner rounded out Johns Hopkins' eight First Team All-Centennial selections.  Turner is enjoying the finest season of his career as he counts a career-high 39 receptions for 281 yards and three touchdowns.  He is the 12th tight end in school history to earn All-Centennial honors and the fifth to grab first team status.
 
Wolf Adds Second All-Centennial Nod
Senior Danny Wolf earned the second All-Centennial selection of his career as he landed a spot on the second team.  Despite missing three games, Wolf leads the team in rushing with 701 yards (100.1/game) and eight touchdowns on the year.  He is averaging 6.0 yards per rush and his eight touchdowns are tied for the team lead.
 
Bedell Grabs Second Team Honors
Graduate student defensive lineman Chris Bedell landed a spot as a Second Team All-Centennial honoree with another strong season on the interior of the line.  In nine games, he counts 23 tackles, including 5.5 for losses and two sacks, one pass breakup and one fumbled recovery to his credit.   Bedell bumps up to the second team this season after being an honorable mention selection in 2021.
 
Talarico Honored as Return Specialist
Sophomore EJ Talarico developed into one of the top kickoff return specialists in the nation this season and was rewarded with Honorable Mention All-Centennial recognition.  In seven games, Talarico had 17 kickoff returns for 465 yards (27.4 yards/return) with one touchdown.  His 465 kickoff return yards are the fourth-highest single-season total in school history, while his 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at Ursinus is the longest in program history.
 
Johns Hopkins (9-1) will conclude the 2022 season on Saturday, November 19 when the Blue Jays host Stevenson (8-2) in the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series.  Kickoff at Homewood Field is set for 12 pm.
