NEW YORK, NY – The second-ranked Johns Hopkins men's fencing team won two of its three matches Friday at the Columbia Invitational. Hopkins earned wins over NJIT and Stevens but fell to host Columbia, ranked second in Division I.
Hopkins kicked off the night with a 21-6 win over NJIT and a sweep of the weapons. Junior

Spencer Grossman Smisek won two bouts each for the Foil squad (6-3). Freshman
Matthew Dao won all three of his bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win.
The Blue Jays followed with a 21-6 win over the fourth-ranked (DIII) Ducks. Hu and freshman
Larry Cai combined for six wins to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win. In the Foil (9-0), Grossman Smisek and Zheng won three bouts each. The Epee squad lost a close 5-4 match with freshman

Hopkins ended the day with a hard-fought 15-12 loss to Columbia. Mehta won two bouts for the Sabre squad (3-6). Zheng and Grossman Smisek each won a bout for the Foil squad (2-7). Dao, junior

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, December 3 at the D'Arnstein '09 Invitational.
