Johns Hopkins Falls in PKs in Centennial Conference Championship

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team lost in a shootout, 5-4, to Muhlenberg in the Centennial Conference Championship Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field.

Freshman Giulian Laudisa had a good look off a volley from in-tight in the 24th minute, but Ben Mulford made the save. In the 41st minute, sophomore Ian Whamond put a free kick right on goal, but Mulford knocked it away. Less than two minutes in, sophomore Jonathan Cui nearly put the Blue Jays on the board after a great leading ball from junior Tyler White, but again Mulford was able to deflect the shot.

Whamond had another good look off a free kick in the 90th minute, as he looked to pick the bottom left corner, but Mulford knocked the ball out of bounds. The teams then squared off for 20 minutes of overtime. With time winding down in the second overtime, a Lech Dunser header seemed destined to sneak inside the left post, but Mulford got a hand on it as the horn sounded. The teams then headed for a shootout where the Mules prevailed 5-4.

Graduate student Alex Morgret earned his 12th shutout of the season, which is tied for fourth most in school single season history. Mulford, who was named the CC Tournament MVP, made nine saves during regulation and overtime. Hopkins had advantages in shots (21-3) and corners (7-0).

Hopkins will now wait for a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The 64-team field is slated to be announced on NCAA.com on Monday, November 7 at 1:30 pm.
