How it Happened
The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team built a 15-point second-half lead and held off a late rally by 25
th-ranked Gettysburg as the Blue Jays scored a crucial 64-61 road victory Thursday night in Bream Gymnasium. The win is the 15
th straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 19-2 overall and 16-1 in the Centennial Conference, while the Bullets had their 12-game overall and 17-game regular season Centennial Conference winning streaks snapped with the loss.
Â
Leading 28-25 at the half, the Blue Jays outscored the Bullets 24-15 in the third quarter to grab a 52-40 lead. Tied at 33 after a pair of Mackenzie Tinner free throws for the Bullets, the Blue Jays took control with a 9-0 run that took less than two minutes. Sophomore
Christine Corpuz ignited the run with back-to-back layups and followed an
Erin Walsh layup with a traditional three-point play to make it 42-33 with just over three minutes remaining in the period.
Â
The Bullets halted the run with a Caitlyn Priore triple, but Walsh answered with two free throws and the Blue Jays  got two late threes of their own from
Natalie Mann and
Michaela O'Neil to help craft the 12-point lead at the end of the third. A
Greta Miller layup gave the Blue Jays a game-high 15-point lead before GC got the final three points of the quarter.
Â
The Blue Jays had a 13-point lead after a
Jadyn Murray layup with eight minutes remaining, but the Bullets began chipping away behind the play of Tinner, who fueled a 10-2 Gettysburg run with eight points in just under three minutes to make it 60-55 with 4:33 on the clock.
Â
Diarra Oden and Corpuz combined for four free throws down the stretch and the Blue Jays never let the Bullets make it a one-possession game until Christina Richson hit a three-pointer with less than a second to play to account for the 64-61 final score.
Â
The opening quarter saw the teams battle evenly as the first 10 minutes ended with a 14-14 tie. A 7-7 tie quickly turned into a 14-9 Bullet lead as Gettysburg ran off seven straight points on a Carly Rice triple and four points from Olivia Matto. The Blue Jay defense clamped down and held the Bullets scoreless over the final 4:48 of the period while getting a layup from Murray and a three-pointer from Corpuz to pull even.
Â
The Blue Jays' three-point halftime lead came after the teams had stretched the 14-14 tie to a deadlock at 22. Oden then hit three free throws and Walsh added three points of her own in the final two minutes to help Hopkins to the halftime advantage.
