WASHINGTON, DC – The fourth-ranked Georgetown men's lacrosse team used an 8-0 mid-game run to take control of the Hoyas' fourth all-time meeting with Johns Hopkins and GU cruised to a 16-8 win over the Blue Jays at Cooper Field Sunday afternoon. Georgetown grabs a win in its season open to start the year 1-0, while Johns Hopkins had a two-game season-opening winning streak snapped and slips to 2-1.
Â
Georgetown took control of the game with the eight-goal run that turned an early 5-2 deficit into a 10-5 lead that Hopkins didn't seriously threaten over the final 25 minutes. Dylan Watson scored three times during the spree for the Hoyas and Alex Trippi scored twice as five different players found the back of the net during the run. The Hoyas held the Blue Jays scoreless from 1:50 mark of the first quarter until the 6:43 mark of the third to help seal the victory.
Â
The 10-5 lead was down to 11-7 at the end of the third quarter as the Blue Jays halted the Hoya run with a
Jakson Raposo goal from the slot with 6:43 on the third quarter clock and
Joey Epstein answered Watson's fourth of the game when he scored on a wrap-around with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter to make it a four-goal game entering the final period.
Â
Any hopes for a Blue Jay comeback were dashed in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter as the Hoyas got goals from four different players during that time with Watson's fourth of the day making 15-7 at the 9:29 mark. Watson and
Brendan Grimes traded goals in the final 6:02 to account for the final scoring.
Â
The Blue Jays jumped out to the early 5-2 lead as they used a three-goal run in a four-minute span to turn a 2-2 tie into the three-goal lead.Â
Casey McDermott, Grimes and Epstein found the back of the net in the three-goal run with
Connor DeSimone assisting on the Grimes and Epstein tallies. Watson scored the first of his six goals with seven seconds remaining in the opening quarter to ignited the game-turning 8-0 run.
