The Short Story:
Tripp Myers drove in four runs and
Matt Savedoff threw 4.0 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen to help Johns Hopkins hold on to a 6-5 win over Stevenson under the lights on Thursday night.
How it Happened
• After a 1-2-3 first inning for
Kieren Collins,
Tripp Myers jumped all over a one-out fastball, depositing it over the wall in right-field to give Johns Hopkins an early 1-0 lead.
• Stevenson answered back in the top of the second, getting a leadoff base runner after an error from Blue Jay second baseman
Jack Pausic. Trevor Smoot singled to right to put two on with one away. Jake Cunkle singled up the middle, scoring Tommy Holcomb to make it 1-1. After retiring the next batter, Collins allowed a two-out single to Dylan Scott, scoring Smoot and putting the Mustangs on top, 2-1.
• Myers struck again for the Jays in the bottom of the second, putting JHU back on top, 3-2.
Sam Frank gave the Jays a base runner with a one-out single to center. With the infield shifted,
Jack Walters dropped down a bunt for a base knock, putting two runners on.
Matthew Cooper was retired, but Brady Power walked Jimmy Stevens to load the bases. Myers roped one into right, scoring Walters and Frank.
• The string of scoring continued with Stevenson tying it once more in the top half of the third. After retiring the leadoff hitter, Collins allowed a one-out single to Jonathan Brandt. Holcomb added another base knock, pushing Brandt to third. Amani Jones ripped a ball off the right-field wall, catching a pole on the fence to hold him to a single. Brandt scored to tie the contest, but Collins got Smoot to bounce into a double play to end the inning.
• JHU battled back in front in the bottom of the fourth. Frank popped up on the infield to begin the frame, but Power dropped it, allowing Frank to reach safely. Walters drew a free pass, giving the Jays two no-out base runners. After retiring the next two hitters, Power ran into Myers once again, allowing the sophomore to send a single into right-center, scoring Frank.
• Neither team could remain in front for long as the Mustangs once again tied it in the fifth. Collins retired a pair, but allowed a two-out double to Holcomb. Jones ripped another double, past the outstretched glove of Walters at third, to score Holcomb and tie the game at 4-4.
• Hopkins took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning, keeping Collins in line for the win. With Jake Pigeon on to pitch for Stevenson,
AJ King drew a walk and
Shawn Steuerer singled to left center.
Jared deFaria grounded sharply to third, reaching on a fielder's choice, but removing Steuerer from the bases. With the middle infield back looking for a double play, Pausic grounded to short, but was able to beat the throw at first, driving in King with an RBI fielder's choice.
• Insurance came for Hopkins in the bottom of the seventh. Jason Labrador came on to pitch, but walked deFaria and Pausic and was immediately pulled. Matt Kossey entered and retired Frank, but hit Walters with a pitch to load the bases. Once again, it was a fielder's choice to give the Jays a run as Cooper grounded it to short, but beat the throw to bring home deFaria.
• Things got murky in the eighth for freshman
Matt Savedoff as he allowed a leadoff double to Holcomb and another RBI single to Jones, making it 6-5 with no outs. Savedoff issued a walk before striking out Jake Cunkle to pick up a crucial first out. He struck out the pinch-hitting Billy McAdam before hitting Dylan Scott to load the bases. Savedoff reared back and blew one by Brandon Perillo to retire the side and keep the lead intact.
Inside the Box Score

• Steuerer continues his tear at the plate, picking up another two hits. The freshman is hitting .424 with a team-best 14 hits.
• Savedoff earns his first career save, throwing 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out a career-high six. In the last eight days, Savedoff has given the Jays 15.0 innings, allowed just two runs and struck out 15. He has earned his first career win and save during that run.
