The Short Story:Â Tenth-ranked Michigan scored the game's last three goals to top the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team, 9-7, Friday afternoon in both teams' Big Ten opener.
Â
How it Happened
• Trailing by one with 9:02 to play, Julia Schwabe scored on a hard shot from the middle of the eight-meter to spark the game-deciding three-goal run. Kaley Thompson then put the Wolverines on top when she scored on the run from the right alley at 5:28. Caroline Davis pushed the lead to two at the 2:53-mark with a shot to the far post from the left alley.
• This one was close from the opening whistle as neither team as there were six ties, four lead changes and neither team led by more than two. Erin Garvey gave Michigan the early lead scoring on a left-handed shot to the top right corner. Hopkins answered with back-to-back goals just 50 seconds apart from senior
Georgia Esmond and junior
Madison McPherson. Esmond dodged from behind and beat Arielle Weissman low to the stick side. McPherson then cashed in a free position shot to put the Blue Jays on top.
• Michigan then got goals from Kaitlyn Mead and Schwabe to grab a 3-2 lead after one quarter. Junior
Bailey Cheetham pulled Hopkins back even at the 8:23-mark in the second with a free position goal. Once again, the Wolverines answered with a pair of goals, over an 11-minute span, to go up 5-3 early in the third.
• Fifth-year senior
Shelby Harrison scored twice, just 91 seconds apart, to knot the score at five with 7:06 to play in the third. Harrison dodged down the middle of the fan and scored on a low shot from in-tight to pull the Jays within one. Sophomore
Abbey Hurlbrink drew then a slide and found Harrison open in the left alley, and she blew one past Weissman to tie the game.
• Thompson answered with 3:17 to play on a shot from the left alley to once again put Michigan on top. With time winding down on a Wolverines yellow card, Esmond dodged from behind, tip-toed the crease and scored from the doorstep to tie the game at six with 10:20 to play. Just 23 seconds later, junior
Maeve Barker took a pass from sophomore
Cameron Levine, curled around the crease and scored with her back to the goal to stake Hopkins to a 7-6 lead. The lead was short-lived however as the Wolverines would close the game on a 3-0 run to grab the win.
