Late Rally Not Enough As Jays Fall To Lakers

• Score: #13 Johns Hopkins-4, Oswego State-6

• Pitching Decision: W: Poveda (1-0) • L: Offman (0-1) • Save: Sanders (1)
• The Short Story: The Jays clawed back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning, but ultimately fell at the hands of Oswego State on Saturday morning in Auburndale, FL.

How it Happened
• Oswego State used a four run third inning to jump ahead of the Jays and starting pitcher Reed Bolin. Bolin loaded the bases with nobody away before getting a grounder to short off the bat of Paul Tammaro. The Jays got an out at second, but Oswego took a 1-0 lead. Bolin got another grounder and once again, the Jays got an out at second base. With two outs, Kyle Lauria reached on an error by Dylan Whitney, bringing another run home. The Lakers loaded the bases once more and Julian Drew brought home two more runs with a single up the middle.

• The Jays finally struck in the seventh inning, loading up on extra-base hits. Shawn Steuerer kicked off the inning with a triple into right-center. Sam Frank ripped one down the left-field line, bringing home Steuerer with an RBI double. The extra-base party continued as Sam Browning roped a ball to the wall in left, replacing Frank at second with an RBI double. After Caleb Cyr popped up for the first out of the inning, Whitney hit a ball off the wall in left for an RBI double, the fourth extra-base hit of the inning.

• Hopkins tied it in the top of the eighth inning after getting a 1-2-3 inning from Jonah Offman in the bottom of the seventh. Jared deFaria hit a ball sharply to center, but it was caught for out number one to kick off the inning. Jack Pausic came to the plate and battled, forcing a 3-2 count and fouling off multiple pitches before crushing a solo shot over the wall in left to tie the contest at 4-4.

• To open the bottom half of the inning, Lakers pinch-hitter Christian McCarthy found the gap in right-center, starting the inning off with a leadoff triple. Offman picked up a strikeout, but a sharply hit grounder by Ryan Enos got past Steuerer and the error brought home a run for a 5-4 Lakers lead. Later in the inning, Tishawn Featherstone hit an RBI single to give Oswego some late insurance.

 • The Jays threatened in the ninth, but fell just short in the comeback effort. Pinch-hitting, Jack Walters reached base on an error to start the inning. Whitney hit a one-out single to right, putting the tying run on base with one out. Jacob Sanders came into pitch for Oswego, getting a flyout and a ground ball to end the game.
