The Short Story:Â The 22nd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team outscored Coastal Carolina, 11-4, over the second and third quarters en route to a 16-8 win on Sunday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• The Chanticleers struck first when Avery McIlwaine scored off the dodge with just five seconds left on the possession clock. The Blue Jays answered with a
Georgie Gorelick free position goal at 8:42 that sparked a 6-0 Hopkins' run. The run spanned exactly 17 minutes and was capped by a
Georgia Esmond transition goal.
Jeanne Kachris took the ball away on the defensive end and passed the ball to
Keegan Barger, who carried into the offensive zone. She then found Esmond open on the crease for the quick score.
• Hannah Demis scored on a free position shot at 5:13 to end Coastal Carolina's scoreless drought of more than 22 minutes.
Shelby Harrison had the final say of the half, scoring on a free position shot to complete her first-half hat trick and send Hopkins into the break with a 7-2 lead.
• The Blue Jays wasted little time pushing their lead to seven with back-to-back
Abbey Hurlbrink goals in the opening 88 seconds of the second half. Lauren Cremen answered for Coastal at 13:03, but Hopkins came right back with three goals in less than two minutes.
Jordan Carr was on the receiving end of a give-and-go with Barger to ignite the spurt. The Blue Jays then cashed in on an
Annika Meyer interception that ended with a
Maeve Barker score on the doorstep. Carr bookended the spurt with a shot from the right alley off a
Bailey Cheetham feed.
• McIlwaine sandwiched a pair of goals around a Gorelick strike and it was 13-5 with 1:03 to play in the third. The Blue Jays responded with another three-goal spurt, with goals from Barker,
Ashley Mackin and
Carly Steinlauf to push out to a 16-5 lead with 10:55 left. The Chanticleers scored three goals in the final five minutes to make it an eight-goal game.
