BALTIMORE, MD – The top-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead less than four minutes into its game against Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field on Saturday evening and the Terrapins never looked back in a 22-7 victory over the Blue Jays. Maryland improves to 12-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten, while the Blue Jays slip to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten.
Â
The Terps got an unassisted goal from Kyle Long just 29 seconds into the game to jump-start the four-goal, game-opening run; four different Maryland players scored during the spree.
Â
The Blue Jays got an extra-man goal from
Connor DeSimone just over a minute after Maryland's fourth goal, but the Terps responded with another four- goal run that bridged the first and second quarters and built the lead to seven.
Â
Hopkins would trim the deficit to 8-3 on back-to-back goals from
Owen McManus and
Brendan Grimes midway through the second quarter and the Blue Jay defense came up a stop after the Grimes goal, but the Terps turned a failed clear into a goal that ignited a quick three-goal spurt that pushed the lead to 11-3 and Maryland never looked back.
Â
The Terps would score 11 straight after a
Joey Epstein goal late in the second quarter for the Blue Jays before Hopkins ended the game with goals from
Johnathan Peshko,
Garrett Degnon and Alex Mabbett to close out the scoring in the final period.
