Blue Jays Keep Season Alive With Sweep Of Haverford

GAME ONE
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 10, Haverford - 7
• Records: JHU (19-17, 9-8) • HC (18-18, 9-8)
• Pitching Decision: W: Tarantino (3-3) • L – Williams (5-4)
• The Short Story: After the Fords put up five runs in the eighth inning to tie the game at 7-7, Johns Hopkins punched back in the ninth with a three-run inning to take game one against the Fords, keeping their Centennial Tournament hopes alive.

How it Happened
• The Jays scored three runs in an adventurous ninth inning to take a 10-7 lead after giving up five runs in the eighth. Matthew Cooper rached on an error by pitcher August Williams to open the frame. Steuerer singled up the middle to give Hopkins a pair of base runners. Williams' second throwing error of the inning, this one a failed pickoff attempt, moved the runners up 90 feet. Dillon Souvignier pinch hit for the Jays and laced a double down the right field line to put the Jays back on top 9-7. After retiring Jack Pausic, Williams issued a walk to Jared deFaria after pinch runner James Ingram swiped third. Williams uncorked a wild pitch and Ingram scored to give the Jays a three-run advantage.
• The Blue Jays jumped on Haverford starter Mike Rabayda for three runs in the top of the first inning, matching their total from the last two games combined. Tripp Myers drew a leadoff walk and advanced on a wild pitch before Matthew Cooper smacked a two-run homer to left with one out in the inning. Shawn Steuerer reached base on an error by Zach Becker and proceeded to steal second. With two outs, Jack Pausic lined a double to left center, scoring Steuerer for a 3-0 lead.
• The Fords did get one back in the bottom of the first against Blue Jay starter Matthew Dillard. After striking out Harry Genth to open the inning, Dillard allowed a single to Luke Smith before Anthony Runfola tripled him home to make it 3-1.
• Both teams pushed a run across the board on solo homers in the second inning. Jack Walters hit a one-out opposite field shot for the Blue Jays to make it 4-1 before Zach Landry answered with a solo shot of his own to cut it back to 4-2.
• Hopkins scored two more in the third before a 2.5 inning stretch without a run with both pitchers settling in. Steuerer hit a one-out single to right, scoring on a two-run blast from Pausic to make it 6-2.
• Johns Hopkins tacked on one more in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 7-2. deFaria led off the inning with an infield single, advancing to second on a throwing error by Genth. Dylan Whitney laid down a bunt single, moving deFaria up to third. Tripp Myers hit a sac fly to left, scoring deFaria, but Whitney was thrown out on the bases after the run scored to end the inning.
• Danger struck for the Jays in the bottom of the eighth as the Fords got the better of Jonah Offman. With one away, Offman hit Becker to give the Fords a base runner. Jack Wallis singled to right and Offman hit Zach Buck to load the bases. Landry struck again with another big fly, this one a grand slam to make it a one-run game. Johnny Flieder followed it up with a double before a Daniel Roseman single. Roseman was thrown out at second, trying to extend it for the second out of the inning. Hyunwoo Roh entered the contest for Hopkins, allowing an RBI double to Genth to tie the game. Jack Tarantino came on for the Jays, retiring Smith and closing it out in the ninth to earn the win.

Inside the Box Score
• Cooper's homer was his lone hit of the day, but it gave him a Centennial Conference-best 12 big flys on the season and a team-leading 42 RBI. Cooper becomes one of 12 Blue Jays in program history with 12 homers or more in a single-season.
• Pausic continued a hot week at the plate, tacking on another two extra-base hits to his season total. Pausic is hitting .313 with nine doubles, nine homers, and 31 RBI on the season after another home run and double.
• Dillard went another 7.0 innings on the mound, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out eight. Dillard lowered his ERA to 4.66 on the season and has thrown a team-high 67.2 innings with 62 strikeouts. In his last three starts, Dillard has tossed 17.0 innings and struck out 19 batters while allowing just three runs.

GAME TWO
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 11, Haverford - 7
• Records: JHU (20-17, 10-8) • HC (18-19, 9-9)
• Pitching Decision: W: Tarantino (4-3) • L – Fuller (0-3) • Save – Roh (2)
• The Short Story: Needing a sweep of Haverford to keep their season alive, the Blue Jays defeated the Fords 11-7 in game two of the doubleheader to clinch a spot in the Centennial Tournament.

How it Happened
• After falling behind 1-0 after the first inning, the Blue Jays used a four-run second inning to take early control of a must-win ball game. Steuerer led off the second with a base hit up the middle. Pausic drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. With one out, Whitney singled up the middle, scoring Steuerer to tie the game at 1-1. With Pausic and Whitney aboard, Walters hit his second home run of the day to give JHU a 4-1 lead.
• Tarantino, starting game two after pitching the final 1.1 innings of game one, pitched a shutdown inning before getting some more offensive help from his freshman third baseman. Steuerer picked up his second hit of the contest, this one a solo shot to make it 5-1 Blue Jays.
• The Fords pushed back in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the deficit to 5-3. Smith doubled to left to lead off the inning and was followed by a Runfola walk. After a double steal, Landry picked up a one-out single to make it 5-2. Buck hit a sac fly to center, scoring Runfola, but Landry was thrown out after the run scored to end the inning.
• The bats were lively for JHU all day and remained so in the fourth inning. Walters followed up his homer with a single through the right side. Ingram doubled down the line in left, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. AJ King singled to score Walters and a throwing error brought home Ingram to extend the lead to 7-3.
• Just like in game one, the Fords used a big homer to make things tight. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Tarantino issued a one-out walk to Runfola. After getting a second out, he allowed a base hit to Landry, bringing up a two-on two-out situation for Buck. Buck took advantage, homering over the left field wall to cut the JHU lead down to one run.
• After a pair of scoreless frames, Hopkins got a little bit of breathing room in the top of the seventh. deFaria singled through the left side with one away in the inning and came around to score on an RBI triple from Whitney.
• That wasn't the end of the insurance. The Jays scored three more in the eighth to put things in a safer spot. A little two-out rally did the trick this time with Cooper drawing a walk to start it. Steuerer's second homer of the contest pushed the Jays lead to 10-6. Pausic followed it up with a blast of his own to make it a five-run game.
• The bottom of the eighth inning got dicey once again as Jack McRae walked the first three batters of the inning. Roh entered the game, picking up an out as Smith brought in a run with a sac fly. Runfola reloaded the bases with an infield single, but Roh struck out Becker and Landry to end the threat. The junior righty took down the Fords 1-2-3 in the ninth to close it out.

Inside the Box Score
• After a 1-15 stretch, Steuerer responded in a big way to help the Blue Jays clinch a postseason berth. The freshman went 5-10 on the day with six runs scored, two homers and three RBI. This is Steuerer's second career multi-homer game. The freshman ends the regular season as the Jays leader in avg (.387), runs (37), hits (55) and total bases (97).
• Coming into the day, Walters had just one homer on the season and two for his career. The senior infielder left the yard twice today, picking up three hits in game two and driving in three runs. Walters has a team best OBP of .450.
• Myers, Pausic, deFaria and Whitney all had two hits to join Steuerer and Walters with multi-hit games.
• Tarantino is the first Blue Jay pitcher to earn two victories in the same day since at least 2001.
