The Short Story:Â The 13
th-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead six minutes into its NCAA First Round game against 25
th-ranked Johns Hopkins Friday afternoon and held off a furious midgame rally by the Blue Jays to score a 17-12 win at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Stadium.
Â
In addition to ending the Blue Jays' season, the loss also brought a close to the 29-year career of Johns Hopkins head coach
Janine Tucker.
Â
How it Happened
• The early 4-0 lead for the Devils, which was bookended a pair of Katie DeSimone goals, was down to two at 7-5 as the Blue Jays used a 5-3 spurt the bridged the first and second quarters to jump back into the game.
•
Madison McPherson, who had a game-opening goal disallowed, got the Blue Jays on the board at the 8:43 mark of the opening period and the 5-3 run included a pair of
Abbey Hurlbrink goals as well.
• Duke responded with three straight from three different players to make it 10-5 as the first-half clock ticked under the four-minute mark. An unassisted
Maeve Barker strike 3:09 before the half pulled the Jays to within four and that held for almost the remainder of the first half – almost.
• The Blue Devils turned the 10-6 lead with less than a minute to play in the first half into a 13-6 lead at the half as they scored three times in the final 25 seconds. Maddie Jenner dunked one home on the doorstep with 25 seconds remaining and Olivia Carner went right to the goal off the ensuing draw to make it 12-6 just 12 seconds later. Katie Keller then lobbed one in to the 6-foot-2 Jenner in the slot and Jenner scored with 0.7 seconds left to give the Devils the seven-goal halftime lead.
• The Blue Jays got a pair of early third quarter saves from
Kaitlyn Pham, who came on in relief to start the second half, and that helped spark a three-goal Blue Jay run to pull the Jays within 13-9 midway through the period. A McPherson goal jump-started the spree for Hopkins, which also got goals from
Bailey Cheetham and Hurlbrink during the spree.
• The Devils halted the Blue Jay run with back-to-back goals of their own in a 90-second span to extend the lead to 15-9. DeSimone scored in an unsettled situation off a nice cross-crease feed from Keller and Carner pushed the lead back to six when she scored with 4:43 on the third-quarter clock.
• The Blue Jays had one final push and trimmed the deficit to 16-11 on a late third-quarter goal from
Georgie Gorelick and an early fourth-quarter strike from McPherson, but DeSimone answered McPherson's goal with 9:22 on the clock and the teams traded goals in the final two minutes to account for the final scoring.
Â
What it Means
• Tucker caps her 29-year career as Hopkins' all-time winningest women's lacrosse coach; she finishes with a career record of 313-180 and led the Blue Jays to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 10 since transitioning the program from Division III to Division I in 1999.
• Duke has won both NCAA Tournament meetings with the Blue Jays as the Devils beat the Blue Jays, 12-7, in the 2007 NCAA Quarterfinals.
Â

• Jenner scored twice and had 10 draw controls as the Blue Devils held a 20-12 advantage at the draw.
