ATLANTA – The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to 14
th-ranked Emory in its final match at the Eagles' East-West Classic on Saturday. Emory won by scores of 25-23, 25-12 and 26-24 to deal the short-handed Blue Jays their third loss at the nation's premier in-season Division III volleyball tournament. Johns Hopkins had fallen to top-ranked Claremont and second-ranked Trinity (TX) on Friday.
Â
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-5 lead in set one, only to have the Blue Jays fight back and grab a 12-10 lead on the hot serving of
Evelyn Batista, who went to the line with the Jays down four and left with Hopkins up a point at 12-11. The set was tied eight different times down the stretch, including at 22-all before Emory's Carly Wallace ended the set with a kill.
Â
The second set was all Emory as the Eagles jumped to a quick 11-4 lead and never let the Blue Jays get closer than six in what became the 25-12 win.
Â
A third-set thriller that the Eagles pulled out 26-24 ended things, but the Blue Jays made them work until the end. The set featured 11 ties and five lead changes and the Blue Jays held a 23-20 lead after a
Simone Adam service ace, but a kill from Alana Dawson jump-started a set-ending 5-1 run for the Eagles, who got a Lily Martin kill and a Blue Jay attack error to polish off the match.
Â
In a match that featured 25 ties and 14 lead changes, the Eagles got 11 kills from Kaya Monrose and four other players collected at least five kills to fuel the victory. Emory hit .268 for the match and held the Blue Jays to a .049 mark to secure the win.
Â
Adam paced the Blue Jays with a match-high 12 kills and added pair of service aces, while
Roxy Karrer added eight kills and
Helena Swaak chipped in with 17 assists and seven digs. For her efforts in Hopkins' three matches this weekend, Adam was named to the All-Tournament Team.
