Hopkins Finishes W&J Invitational With A Pair of Wins

WASHINGTON, PA – The Johns Hopkins water polo team wrapped up a successful weekend with wins over Augustana (IL) and host Washington & Jefferson on Sunday at the Presidents' Invitational. The Blue Jays improve to 4-4 on the season.

Hopkins opened the day with a 17-12 win over Augustana. The Vikings grabbed an early 3-1 lead but goals by Seth Berke and Liam Housenbold pulled the Blue Jays even at the end of the first. Augustana retook the lead less than 90 seconds into the second, but just 16 seconds later Paul Gensbigler scored to make it a 4-4 game. That sparked a four-goal run as the Blue Jays pushed out to a 7-4 lead with 2:48 to go in the half.

The Vikings ended the run with a Joseph Addison goal at 2:04 to cut the lead to two. The teams would trade goals over the ensuing five minutes and Hopkins led 10-8. Cameron Burns and Gensbigler scored back-to-back goals to push the lead to four with 1:57 play in the third. Oskar Bannister got one back for the Vikings, but two Emerson Sullivan goals in the final 21 seconds gave the Blue Jays a 14-9 lead heading into the fourth. The teams swapped scores over the final eight minutes and Hopkins secured the 17-12 win.

JHU wrapped up the weekend with an 11-6 win over host Washington & Jefferson. The Blue Jays scored the game's first three goals to take the early lead. Aidan Miller seemed to stem the tide with a goal for the home team, but JHU answered with three more to push out to a 6-1 lead at 6:07 in the second. Aiden Johnson and Chris Edwards sandwiched goals around a strike from Gensbigler and it was 7-3 late in the quarter.

Chris Freese had the final say of the half, while Gensbigler scored to open the third and just like that Hopkins led 9-3. The teams then traded scores over the final 12 minutes of the game as the Blue Jays took the 11-6 win.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 17 as the Blue Jays travel to Lewisburg, PA. JHU will face host Bucknell at 12:40 pm followed by Mercyhurst at 4:40 pm.
