BALTIMORE, MD – The 12
th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team scored a pair of goals just two and a half minutes apart in the second half to defeat visiting Stevenson Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Stevenson had a good chance early to get on the board with a free kick just outside the top of the box. Iliass Zouita sent the free kick over the wall and graduate student
Alex Morgret turned it aside. The ball ricocheted right to Tiago Silva, who hit the crossbar with his shot from in-tight.
In the 25
th minute senior
Axel Whamond's shot from 15 yards out seemed destined for the bottom right corner, but Kristian Slaby got a hand on it. Fifteen minutes later, junior
Tyler White dribbled toward the middle of the field and ripped a shot from 30 yards out that looked like it was going to drop in, but the Mustangs' six-foot-five goalie was able to tip it over the cross bar.
The Blue Jays had back-to-back chances in the 60
th and 61
st minutes from junior
Aidan Dunphy and White, but Slaby saved Dunphy's one-timer and White's free kick missed just wide. Seven minutes later, junior
Francis Meyer rang a left-footed volley off the cross bar.
Hopkins finally solved Slaby in the 73
rd minute as the Blue Jays cashed in on a corner. Freshman
Giulian Laudisa sent the corner into the box where
Axel Whamond slipped a low shot into the middle of the goal. The Jays doubled their lead in the 76
th minute off the foot of sophomore
Ian Whamond. Laudisa centered the ball to
Axel Whamond in the box, who took one touch, turned and dropped the ball back to
Ian Whamond, who one-timed a right-footed shot into the left upper 90.
Morgret finished with three saves in his fifth shutout of the season. Slaby made eight saves in the loss for the Mustangs.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 17 at Swarthmore. The Centennial Conference opener is slated for a 7:00 pm start at Clothier Field Stadium.
Notes: Hopkins improves to 5-0-1 all-time against Stevenson, including 4-0-0 at Homewood Field.
