SELINSGROVE, PA – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team fell to Christopher Newport, 3-1, on the second day of the Susquehanna Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 3-5 on the year with the loss, while the Captains improve to 7-5.

The Captains took set one 25-16 as they used a nine-point run off the serve of Rebecca Frey to turn a 12-12 tie into a 21-12 lead that the Blue Jays never threatened. Included in the nine-point run were three straight service aces.

A tight second set that featured 10 ties and four lead changes went to CNU, 25-23. The Blue Jays fought back from a 15-11 deficit to pull even at 19 and the set was tied at 23 after a
Helena Swaak service ace, but a Blue Jay service error and a kill sealed the win for the Captains.

The third set was all Johns Hopkins as Adam collected six kills and the Blue Jays served up five aces to fuel a 25-11 victory. Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 4-0 lead off the serve of
Evelyn Batista, quickly pushed the lead to 10-3 and cruised to the 14-point set win.

A thrilling fourth set saw a remarkable 14 ties and six lead changes. CNU led 8-3 early, but the Blue Jays rallied with a 13-6 run to grab a 16-14 lead. Adam collected five kills during the spree for the Blue Jays, who would then battle to ties at each point between 19 and 27 before the Captains locked up the win off and a Megan James kill and Blue Jay attack error.

Adam again paced the Blue Jays as she collected a match-high 21 kills and chipped in with six digs.Â
Simrin Carlsen added 10 kills and 13 digs, while
Brooklyn Pater added eight kills. Swaak (23) and
Lida King (20) combined for 43 assists in the loss.

James led a balanced offensive attack for the Captains as he had 11 kills and was one of four CNU players with at least seven in the victory. The Captains also collected nine service aces and benefited from 14 Blue Jay service errors.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Tuesday, September 20 when the Blue Jays welcome Susquehanna to Goldfarb Gym (7:30 pm).
