BALTIMORE, MD- The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team looked to bounce back in conference play after a loss earlier in the week, on Saturday afternoon. Johns Hopkins had to go through the top team in the conference in Haverford to try and get back in the win column. The Blue Jays, led by their impressive defensive effort, mustered up just enough offense to outlast the Fords, 48-44.
The first three quarters of the contest were hotly contested, with both defenses making life difficult on the opposing offenses. The Blue Jays found themselves with a two-point lead with under a minute left in the fourth quarter trying to close out the victory. Hopkins got the ball down to sophomore
Jadyn Murray on the right block. Murray fought through multiple defenders and knocked down a turn-around hook shot from the baseline to give JHU a two-possession lead with just 17.5 seconds left.
After a Haverford basket from Kayla Robinson, Blue Jays guard
Zoe Soule sunk a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to close out the victory.
Hopkins ran out to a 7-0 lead to open things up in the game with a couple baskets coming off steals from the full court press they opened the game in that caused issues for the Fords.
Greta Miller and
Michaela O'Neil both made layups to help spur the run. Haverford, who came in with two of the top scorers in the conference, opened the game cold, shooting just 4-for-17 from the field and 0-for-6 from three-point range. Haverford would steady the ship in the second quarter with their defense holding Hopkins to just eight points to pull within two points going into the halftime break, 22-20.
Freshman
Macie Feldman was impressive during the first half finishing with eight points and was locking things down on the defensive end as well as she came up with three steals and a block.
In the third quarter, the Blue Jays would continue to protect their lead over the Fords. JHU attacked the offensive glass throughout the quarter pulling down six offensive rebounds. These boards led to seven of the teams 12 points in the quarter coming from second chance opportunities.
Greta Miller drove in and finished off the quarter with a layup at the horn to give Hopkins a four-point lead that they would not squander in the final period.
In just her second start of the season, graduate student
Olivia Parisi delivered her second double-double of the season, leading the team with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Feldman tied a career-high in points with 10 and came away with five steals which is a career-high for her.
Haverford, who dropped to 9-4 (6-2) on the season, were led in points by Ally Landau, who had 14, and Kayla Robinson who added 12 as well as eight rebounds.
The Blue Jays moved on to 7-4 (4-2) on the year and are now 5-0 when playing on their home floor. The Blue Jays will continue to move through their conference schedule when they take on Swarthmore on the road on Tuesday, January 10 (6 pm).
