LEWISBURG, PA – Host Bucknell used a 5-1 third quarter to pull away en route to an 18-9 win over the Johns Hopkins water polo team Saturday night in MAWPC action.
Sophomore
Gavin Brooke and freshman
Alec Baker sandwiched goals around strikes from Shay Gillearn and Doruk Ozar and it was 2-2 with 2:17 to play in the opening quarter. Ozar and Aleksa Stefanovic then scored twice in the final two minutes to put Bucknell up 4-2 after one.
Walker Butler and Sean Michael Tunnicliff opened the second with back-to-back goals and the Bison's lead was 6-2. Freshman
Owen Bartlett halted the run with a goal at the 4:47-mark, but Gillearn answered for Bucknell to put the home team up 7-3. Sophomore
Quint Steffey got one back for the Blue Jays with a six-on-five goal and it was 7-4 at the half.
Ozar and Gillearn opened the third with back-to-back goals to push the lead to five. Senior
Seth Berke made it a four-goal game with a score at the 4:22-mark. But the Bison answered with four straight to go up 13-5 early in the fourth quarter.
Bartlett and Steffey sandwiched goals around a Stefanovic score and it was a seven-goal game with 4:41 to play. Liam Stott scored just 24 seconds later to spark a 4-1 run to tend the game as the Bison grabbed the 18-9 win.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, October 15 as the Blue Jays visit Mount St. Mary's.
