BALTIMORE, MD – The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins team looked unstoppable in its tri-match against Bryn Mawr and Averett Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-9) win against the Owls before completing the perfect day with another 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-16) victory over the Cougars. The wins extended the Jays streak to nine — a new season-best — as they have now gone five matches without dropping a set.
Hopkins (18-3, 6-0 Centennial) kicked off its day with a rout of Bryn Mawr (3-13, 0-6 Centennial), hitting a season-best .621 while holding the Owls to a hitting percentage of -.097.
Simrin Carlsen put together another historic effort, tallying a game-high 16 kills — more than the entirety of Bryn Mawr's roster — on 18 attacks, setting a new program record for hitting percentage when attempting 15-19 attacks at .889.
Lida King finished the game with a team-high 21 assists while Carlsen, King and
Elizabeth Hsieh shared the team lead for aces at two apiece.
After the sides traded points to begin the match, a kill from
Alice Yu sparked a 7-1 run to put the Jays ahead 8-2. The Owls stopped the bleeding momentarily before another 7-1 run that featured a pair of kills by
Chidinma Onukwugha as well as two service aces from Carlsen made it a 15-4 match. The lead remained at 11 until
Simone Adam's lone kill of the match ignited a third 7-1 run, shooting Hopkins ahead 23-6. With the score at 24-8 after a pair of service errors, Onukwugha tallied her third kill of the set to seal the 25-8 win.
Set 2 started almost identically to Saturday's first, with an 8-1 run that saw Carlsen tally three kills and
Eloise Estrada grab a pair quickly made it an 8-2 game. A service error once again stopped the run, but Bryn Mawr immediately returned the favor with a fault of their own, with an ensuing 10-1 run putting the Jays ahead 19-5.
A 4-1 spurt that featured kills from Carlsen and Norman — the senior had five kills on just six attacks with no errors in the win — made it 23-7. A 14-point set at 23-9, Carlsen added another kill before a rejection from Estrada and
Jordan Price — one of her team-high two in the match — clinched the second set 25-9 and put Hopkins up 2-0.
The final set of Saturday's opener once again saw the Jays open up a commanding 7-1 lead. The Owls began their climb back, getting as close as five points before a 10-2 run made it 21-8. A kill from Bryn Mawr's Emma Loller momentarily stopped the bleeding before a match-clinching 4-0 run closed the set 25-9 and match 3-0 in favor of Hopkins.
The Jays stayed hot against Averett (12-12, 6-5 ODAC), hitting .378 paced by nine kills apiece from Carlsen, Adam and Yu. The difference was on the defensive end, where Hopkins held the Cougars to a negative hitting percentage while registering a season-best 13 blocks. Onukwugha led the way with seven to match her season-high, with Yu (6), Carlsen (3) and
Pamela Chiakpo (3) also putting in impressive efforts.
Chiakpo kicked off the match with the first of her six kills, starting an extended 7-2 to put the Jays firmly in control. The Cougars cut into the deficit making it a two-point set at 8-6, but that was as close as the game would get, with a 12-1 that featured kills by Adam, Carlsen and Yu as well as a trio of blocks put Hopkins up 20-7. The sides traded points before a 3-0 run that was ended by a solo block from Onukwugha concluded Set 1 25-10.
Set 2 saw the visitors jump ahead 4-2 — the first time the Jays trailed by more than one all afternoon — but a 5-0 response quickly gave Hopkins back the lead at 7-4. A pair of 3-0 bursts halfway through the set gave the Jays a 16-10 lead before a 4-0 run featuring an Onukwugha kill and two aces from
Evelyn Batista all but put the set out of reach at 20-10. With the score 22-13, Hopkins got two kills from Yu to help close out the set 25-13 and go ahead 2-0.
Saturday's final set was never close, with the Jays opening the stanza with an 11-2 run and never looking back. Averett got as close as six after using a 4-0 run to make it 21-15, but Hopkins would get four of the next five points on a kill from King as well as a pair of blocks, with a Yu-kill sealing the set and match.
The Jays return to action Wednesday, October 25 when they kick off a three-game road trip with a match against McDaniel. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
