WESTMINSTER, MD – Host McDaniel got a goal in the 53
rd minute and the Green Terror made that one strike stand up as they topped visiting and eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins, 1-0, at the McDaniel Soccer Complex Wednesday afternoon. McDaniel improves to 9-2-5 overall and 5-1-3 in the Centennial Conference, while the Blue Jays slip to 12-2-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the Centennial.
Â
The Blue Jays took eight of the 11 first-half shots and collected all four corner kicks before the break, but couldn't solve the Green Terror defense and the game went to the break scoreless.
Â
McDaniel came out more assertive in the second half and struck just under eight minutes after halftime as Jessica Weinoldt fed Liz LeChard at the top of the box and LeChard had just enough time to loft a shot to the near side and past the outstretched hands of Blue Jay 'keeper
Eva Breiland.
Â
As they had in the first half, the Blue Jays won the stat battle in the second as they outshot the Green Terror 7-3 and took seven of 10 second-half corners, including several in the final 10 minutes, but McDaniel's Lauren Hoolahan would finish with the clean sheet as the Blue Jays were blanked for just the second time this season.
Â
The loss kept the Blue Jays from clinching the top seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament. Johns Hopkins has finished the CC portion of its 2023 schedule and will claim the top seed if Swarthmore suffers a loss or tie in either of its final two regular season games. If the Garnet win both of their remaining games, the top seed will be decided on a tie-breaker.
Â
Johns Hopkins will close the regular season on Saturday, October 28 when the Blue Jays play at Mary Washington (12 pm).
