Johns Hopkins Opens The Season Versus William & Mary

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's swim team opened the 2023-24 season at home against William & Mary. The visiting Tribe beat the Blue Jays, 190-72, for their first win over JHU since 2019.
 
The Blue Jays kicked off their first home meet in nearly two years with a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Sophomore Bryce Lloyd, senior Justin Limberg, sophomore Avery Clapp and freshman Adam Sandid clocked in with a time of 1:33.76.
 
Senior Kellen Roddy followed with second place in the 1000 Free as he touched in 9:57.28. Sophomore Matthew Hartshorn finished in fourth place in 10:13.17. JHU then went two-three in the 200 Free with Sandid grabbing second in 1:44.78. Junior Eric Ji took third with a time of 1:46.63. Lloyd then placed third in the 100 Back as he touched in 52.93, just seven-hundredths of a second out of second place.
 
Freshman Christian Koh swam to a third-place finish in the 100 Breast with a 59.10 as he just out-touched the Tribe's Cole Younger by just four-hundredths of a second. Clapp then placed second in the 200 Fly as he finished in 1:56.30.
 
The 50 Free saw the Blue Jays take third through fifth. Freshman Andrew Gilbert led the contingent with a time of 21.97, followed by sophomores Christian Mayr (22.37) and Shawn Zhou (22.65). Heymann took fourth place in the 100 Free with a time of 48.14. Lloyd followed with a third-place finish in the 200 Back in 1:58.40. Junior Joe Castagno then took third in the 200 Breast as he clocked in at 2:10.80.
 
Roddy picked up a third-place finish in the 500 Free as he finished in 4:51.38. Clapp grabbed the Blue Jays' first win of the season as he beat the field in the 100 Fly with a time of 50.39. Ji then took third place in the 200 IM in 1:57.97. He just beat Hartshorn to the wall by one-hundredth of a second.
 
Hopkins wrapped up the day with second and fourth-place finishes in the 200 Free Relay. The team of Sandid, Clapp, Gilbert and Heymann finished in 1:26.16, just two-tenths of a second from the win. Taking fourth place were senior Reef Ide, Zhou, freshman Rad Couture and Mayr.
 
JHU is back in the pool at the end of the month for the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational at nearby Loyola. The meet is scheduled for October 27-29 and will include Loyola, Towson and UMBC.
