POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team won five of its six contests at the Vassar Invitational Sunday. The Blue Jays' only loss of the day came to 12
th-ranked Yale.
Hopkins opened the day with an easy 27-0 win over Hunter. Sophomore
Adelaide Benoit and freshman
Adele Dai and
Ky McSweeney combined to lead the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Sophomores
Rosey Cepero and
Bethany Lee and freshman
Julianna Wu won three bouts each to lead the Foil squad to a 9-0 win. And in the Epee, it was senior

Katelyn McShine and freshman
Janie McSweeney combined for nine wins.
JHU then beat Tufts, ranked fifth in Division III, 14-13. Freshman
Lauren Priuer won all three of her bouts to lead the Sabre squad to a 6-3 win. Senior
Diya Kulkarni and freshman
Anika Kale won two bouts each to lead the Epee squad to a 5-4 win. The Foil squad lost a tough 6-3 decision.
The Blue Jays won another close match, beating the seventh-ranked Denison Big Red, 14-13. Sophomore
Josephine Chang won her three bouts to lead the Sabre squad to a 5-4 win. McShine,
Maya Zhang, and Kale won two bouts each as the Epee squad earned a 6-3 win. The Foil squad fell 6-3 to the Big Red.
Hopkins then defeated Sacred Heart, 20-7. The Sabre squad won a close 5-4 decision, led by Prieur's three wins. The Foil squad cruised to a 9-0 win with Cepero, Lee and senior
Czarina Alfonso combining for all nine wins. The Epee squad grabbed a 6-3 win with
Janie McSweeney,
Maya Zhang and Kulkarni each winning two bouts.
JHU then fell to 12
th-ranked Yale, 22-5, in its next to last match. The Sabre squad lost 6-3 while the Foil and Epee squads falling 8-1 each. Alfonso, Chang, Prieur, freshman
Victoria Li and sophomore
Mickey Zhang each won one bout for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays ended the day with a 19-8 win over Wellesley, ranked fourth in Division III. Chang and Liu combined for six wins to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win. The Foil squad earned a tight 5-4 win, led by Alfonso's three wins. And in the Epee, Kulkarni, Kale and
Mickey Zhang won two bouts each for a 6-3 win. a
