Virginia Wesleyan Tops Johns Hopkins, 2-1, in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Blue Jays End Season at 16-3-2

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team had its season come to an end Sunday afternoon as the Blue Jays fell to host Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.  The Centennial Conference Champion Blue Jays end the season at 16-3-2.

The Blue Jays had the better of play in the first half and outshot the Marlins 7-1 before halftime, but couldn't solve Rachel Quigley, who posted three first-half saves to keep the game scoreless going into the break.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Virginia Wesleyan broke through as Alexis Miller controlled a Blue Jay goal kick in the middle of the field, dribbled to her left and fired a shot that eluded Hopkins goalie Eva Breiland to make it 1-0.

The Marlins doubled the lead just six minutes later off a scramble in the box.  Virginia Wesleyan played a ball into the area that got caught just out of the reach of Breiland in a sea of offensive and defensive players and Breacain McClenahan was able to poke it through traffic into an open net to push the lead to 2-0.

Johns Hopkins needed little time – just 4:12 to be exact – to cut the deficit in half as Charlotte Tapp collected a feed from Megha Salvi, worked her way across the top of the box and fired back across her body to the far post past the outstretched arms of Quigley to make it 2-1.

From there, the Marlins maintained a strong possession and kept the Blue Jays away from Quigley to seal the one-goal win that advances them to the Sweet 16.
