John Windley's game-winning three at the buzzer hit the rim as the 12
th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker at top-ranked Christopher Newport Saturday night.
Tied at 73, the Captains had the ball with 34 seconds to play. Jahn Hines missed on a layup but Trey Barber tipped in the rebound as the shot clock expired to put the home team up two. On the ensuing possession, the Blue Jays got the ball to Windley and his shot from 26 feet hit the rim.
This one was close from the opening tip as there were eight times and nine lead changes. Hopkins grabbed an early three-point lead on a
Sidney Thybulle bucket in the paint. Collin Hines answered on the other end with a jumper to spark a 12-2 run as Christopher Newport pushed out to a 17-10 lead. Five points from freshman
Brayden Fagbemi, sandwiched around a Caleb Furr jumper, made it a four-point game with 10:28 to go in the half.
Barber scored six of the next eight points for the Captains to fuel an 8-2 spurt as they went up 27-17 just two minutes later. A fast-break layup by Fagbemi, followed by a
Will Sykes layup, grabbed the momentum for the Blue Jays and sparked a 23-6 run. Six different players scored during the run, capped by back-to-back triples from junior
Brian Johansson and Windley to put Hopkins on top 44-30 with 40 ticks on the clock. Hasan Hammad had the final say of the half, hitting a jumper in the paint to make it a five-point game at the break.
Windley opened the second with a bucket from downtown and the Blue Jays' lead was eight. Barber and Fagbemi traded buckets and it was 45-37 just two and a half minutes in. Jahn Hines then hit a pull-up jumper to ignite a 20-5 run that saw CNU grab a 56-50 lead with 10:34 on the clock. Hopkins answered with six straight points from Fagbemi and a triple from Windley and just like that the Blue Jays were up 59-56.
The lead was short-lived however as Barber scored eight straight points, sandwiched around a Fagbemi three-pointer, and CNU led 64-62 with 6:37 to play. Fagebemi tied it with a pair of free throws and then Hopkins grabbed the lead on a
Carson James three. Windley pushed the lead to five with a steal and score with 4:54 on the clock.
The Captains answered with five quick points to knot the score at 69. Fagbemi swung the lead back to the Blue Jays with a bucket from downtown at the 3:21-mark. Barber pulled CNU back within one with a jumper, but James doubled the lead with one of two free throws. Ian Anderson would then tie the game with two shots from the charity stripe with 53 seconds to play.
