Chiakpo, Yu Named Centennial Players of the Week

Duo Uses Career Days to Lead Blue Jays to 3-0 Week

LANCASTER, PA – Following a week that saw the Blue Jays go 3-0 and clinch the top seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament, Johns Hopkins volleyball's Pamela Chiakpo and Alice Yu were named the conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, as released by the Centennial this morning.

Chiakpo put together her best week of the year to help the Jays finish the regular season on a four-match winning streak. The senior averaged 3.60 kills and 4.20 points per set, opening her week with a 10-kill performance on just 17 attempts in a 3-0 sweep of Dickinson. Chiakpo's three-game stretch, however, was highlighted by a career performance against Franklin & Marshall.

Facing off against the Diplomats in a match where a win gave Hopkins the one-seed and a loss dropped them to the four-seed, the senior put the team on her back, registering a career-high 18 kills on a .484 hitting percentage. Almost exactly a year ago to the day, Chiakpo totaled 11 kills in a win over F&M en route to being named the Centennial Conference Tournament MVP, and the Lexington, MA native was the Diplomat-killer once again to lift Hopkins to its fourth straight top-seed.

Chiakpo concluded her impressive week tallying another eight kills to pair with a season-high seven blocks against Shenandoah, but stealing the show in front of the net on the way to her second CC Defensive Player of the Week was Yu.

Entering the week, the sophomore had registered at least three blocks in each of her last four games, a trend the continued tenfold in the Jays' most recent winning streak. Yu got things started with a four-kill, four-block outing against Dickinson and ended them with another two-kill, three-block performance, but it's what she did against F&M that earned her the weekly honor.

Against the Diplomats, the California native totaled a career-best 10 blocks, marking the most rejections in a single match in the Centennial Conference this season as well as the second-most in a four-set match in program history. Yu is now averaging a team-best 0.91 blocks per set, ranking her fourth in the Centennial.

Chiakpo, Yu and the Jays return to Goldfarb Gym Friday, Nov. 10 to take on the lowest remaining seed in the Semifinal round of the Centennial Conference Tournament, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
