HAVERFORD, PA – The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team wrapped up the 2023 portion of its schedule with a dominating performance at Haverford's D'Arnstein '09 Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Jays beat Maryland, Swarthmore, Haverford and Drexel.
Hopkins opened the day with a 27-0 win over Maryland. Juniors
Alan Zheng and
Pranav Shibu and freshman
Yi Peng Sha led the Foil squad to a 9-0 win. Senior
Gabe Insler and freshman
Ethan Insler and
Ayan Bhatnagar went a combined 9-0 for the Epee squad. The Terps did not field a Sabre squad.
JHU then beat Swarthmore by the same score. Sophomores
Larry Cai and
Alex Jeffords and freshman
Miles Zhou each went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Shibu, Sha and sophomore
Spencer Grossman Smisek did the same for the Foil squad. And in the Epee, Gabe and
Ethan Insler and sophomore
Jorge Gana turned the same trick.
The Blue Jays then beat the host Fords, 22-5. Seniors
William Hu and
Qilin Tong each won three bouts as the Sabre squad earned an 8-1 win. Sha and Grossman Smisek went 3-0 each to lead the Foil squad to a 7-2 win. Gana also won all three of his bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win.
Hopkins closed out the meet with a 27-0 win over Drexel. Jeffords, Zhou and freshman
Leonid Kotov won three bouts each and the Sabre squad won 9-0. Shibu, Grossman Smisek and Zheng also won three bouts apiece in a 9-0 win over the Foil squad. The Inslers and Bhatnagar combined for nine wins for the Epee squad.
Zheng earned his 200
th career win and is the 17
th Foilist in JHU history to reach the mark. Hu moved into a tie for 19
th in program history with 170 career Sabre wins.
Hopkins returns to action on January 19-20 at the Philadelphia Invitational.
