Blue Jays Use Fourth-Quarter Rally to Stun Third-Ranked Georgetown, 13-12

Hopkins Outscores GU 5-1 in Fourth Quarter

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team used a five-goal, fourth-quarter run to turn an 11-8 deficit into a 13-11 lead and held off a late push from third-ranked Georgetown as the Blue Jays picked up a 13-12 win over the Hoyas Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.  The Blue Jays improve to 2-0 on young season, while the Hoyas drop their opener and start the season at 0-1.

Facing the three-goal deficit – their second three-goal deficit of the game - entering the final quarter, the Blue Jays needed just over four minutes to slice the margin to 11-9 as freshman Matt Collison swept to his left 10 yards above the goal line and fired a laser inside the post to ignite the five-goal run.

Collison's strike was followed just over two minutes later by a Stu Phillips low-to-low offering that found the net and the Blue Jays were even 99 seconds later when Russell Melendez netted his career-high fourth of the game with 7:24 remaining.

The tie last for just over a minute before Jacob Angelus slipped a nifty cross-crease pass to Dylan Bauer and Bauer stuffed it into an open net and the margin was two 66 seconds later when Angelus found a cutting Garrett Degnon in front and Degnon scored from in tight to make it 13-11.

The Blue Jays, who held decisive fourth-quarter advantages in shots (16-6), ground balls (10-4) and faceoffs (5-of-7) had two possessions following Degnon's goal and were able to milk three minutes off the clock, but the Hoyas regained possession with just under two minutes remaining and pulled within one with 1:06 on the clock when Jacob Kelly dodged from behind the goal and stuck one high to make it 13-12.

The Hoyas won the ensuing faceoff and worked out of timeout with 45 seconds remaining, but an errant pass went out of bounds near midfield to give the Blue Jays possession with 25 seconds on the clock.  A Hopkins turnover gave the Hoyas one last chance in transition, but Graham Bundy, Jr.'s offering at the buzzer was blocked and the Blue Jays had the one-goal win.

In a game of spurts, Georgetown had ridden the early scoring of Tucker Dordevic, who scored three times in the first quarter to stake the Hoyas to a 4-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

The Blue Jays answered – quickly – in the second quarter as they scored three times in a 41-second span before the period was two minutes old and added another just 69 seconds later to turn the 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 lead.  Melendez scored the first of those goals, while Johnathan Peshko and Degnon also tallied during the spree.

Johns Hopkins held the one-goal lead into the middle of the quarter before Georgetown used a three-goal run of its own to grab a 7-5 lead.  Bundy, Jr. scored twice and Dordevic capped his four-goal first half with an unassisted strike to account for the three goals.

A Degnon goal to end the half and an opportunistic Peshko goal to open the third made it 7-7, but the Hoyas had the three-goal lead entering the final period after scoring four of the final five goals of the third quarter to turn the 7-7 tie into the 11-8 lead.
