BALTIMORE, MD – Host and ninth-ranked Loyola outscored the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team, 6-3, in the second half to take a 12-10 win over the Blue Jays in the Battle of Charles Street.
Loyola scored the first three goals of the third quarter, over a span of 12 minutes, and looked like it would take a 9-7 lead into the fourth. But a Greyhounds' shot clock violation led to a transition goal for sophomore defender
Quinlan O'Brien with 12.5 seconds on the clock. Loyola pushed its lead back to two early in the final quarter with a Jillian Wilson goal. Hopkins answered just 66 seconds later when freshman
Ava Angello found senior
Maeve Barker on the crease for her fourth goal of the game.
The Greyhounds got goals from Georgia Latch and Syndi Black over the next eight minutes to go up 12-9 with just 3:24 to play. The Blue Jays kept battling and a
Reagan O'Brien takeaway led to an Angello goal on the other end, cutting the deficit to two with 2:10 on the clock. That's as close as Hopkins could get however as Loyola took the 12-10 win.
Trailing 2-1 after back-to-back Greyhound goals, sophomore
Ashley Mackin dodged to the cage, tiptoed the crease and scored from the doorstep to spark a four-goal Blue Jay run. Angello then scored on a behind-the-back goal in transition, followed by back-to-back goals from Barker and just like that Hopkins led 5-2 with 13:36 to play in the second.
Loyola answered with a run of its own, getting goals from Black, Wilson and Anna Ruby in a four-and-a-half minute spurt to tie the game at five. Junior
Jordan Carr halted the run, and put the Jays back on top, when she picked the bottom left corner off an
Alayna Costa at 7:31. Wilson answered four minutes later with a shot from the middle of the fan to knot the score at six. Junior
Georgie Gorelick had the final say of the half when she dodged to the cage, dropped her stick and beat Lauren Spence on a side-arm shot to send JHU into the half with a 7-6 lead.
Barker led the Blue Jays and tied her career high with four goals. Senior
Bailey Cheetham handed out a career-best three assists, while Angello (2g, 1a) and Mackin (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games.
Reagan O'Brien finished with six caused turnovers, one shy of the school record. Junior
Maggie Tydings made nines saves and picked up three ground balls in the cage. Wilson, Emily Wills and Chase Boyle tallied four points each for the Greyhounds. Ruby (2g, 1a) and Black (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games, while Black had a team-best three caused turnovers.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 25 as the Blue Jays host the Penn Quakers. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 4:00 pm.
