Johns Hopkins Opens Season With Two Victories at Babb Field

Romano Hurls Six Scoreless in Game One Win

BALTIMORE, MD- The Johns Hopkins baseball team kicked off the 2023 season with two games in the Baltimore Invitational and were poised to get off to a hot start to open up the campaign.

GAME ONE

  • Score: Johns Hopkins - 6, Cortland - 0
  • Records: JHU (1-0), Cortland (1-3)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Gabriel Romano (1-0) L: Justin Patsey (0-1)
  • Summary: JHU used a five run second inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead that they would not surrender for the rest of the game. Gabriel Romano tossed six shut out innings in his Blue Jay debut to earn the win.

How it Happened

  • After Romano set down six of the first seven batters he faced, the Blue Jays offense opened up the season with a bang. After a double from Jimmy Stevens and a couple of walks, JHU had the bases loaded with only one away. Dylan Whitney hit a hard ground ball to third that brought in a run on a fielding error by Cortland. Tripp Myers and Matthew Cooper then came through with back-to-back 2-run doubles to open the game up to 5-0.
  • Romano found himself in a bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth inning with two away with Cortland primed to crack the scoreboard for the first time. Romano had a hard chopper hit right back at him, and he was able to control it and make the play at first to get out of the inning.
  • Johns Hopkins added another run to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Dillon Souvignier lined one into right field to plate Shawn Steuerer.
  • After Romano exited, Jasper Carmichael took the bump and provided two solid innings out of the bullpen to hold the Blue Jays 6-0 lead. Carmichael punched out four Red Dragon batters in his first outing since the 2021 season.
  • Bearden Awadzi came in to close things out in the ninth in his first collegiate appearance. The game was capped off by a diving stop at first base by Souvignier for the final out to earn the Blue Jays their first win of the season.

GAME TWO

  • Score: Johns Hopkins - 10, Wittenberg - 3
  • Records: JHU (2-0), Wittenberg (0-1)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Jack McRae (1-0) L: Nick Cunningham (0-1)
  • Summary: JHU launches four homers to erase an early deficit and come away with a 10-3 victory over Wittenberg. Four Blue Jay pitchers combined to limit the Tigers offense and coast to the win.

How it Happened

  • Wittenberg had the bats ready early on in the contest and jumped out to 2-0 lead after two innings. Matt Moore brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to right field in the first and Luke Thomas picked up an RBI on a single in the second inning.
  • In the bottom of the third, Caleb Cyr jacked his first career home run, and the first for the Blue Jays this season, to right center field to put JHU on the board. The Blue Jays grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after Jimmy Stevens had an RBI single off of the right field wall, followed up by a walk with the bases loaded by Cyr to give JHU a 3-2 lead, which they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
  • In his collegiate debut, William Boneno hurled four innings only allowing 2 runs and punching out three. The Blue Jays bullpen would take the final five innings and hold the Tigers to just three hits and no runs throughout the rest of the game.
  • After an impressive freshman season, Shawn Steuerer picked up where he left off as he mashed a three run homer to right field in the bottom of the fifth to give the Blue Jays a more comfortable lead.
  • Johns Hopkins put the game out of reach with two monster home runs in in the seventh inning. Matthew Cooper launched one to left field and Dillon Souvignier crushed one to right field, both for 2 RBI to give Johns Hopkins a 10-3 lead that would remain for the rest of the game.
