Paul Grabs 100th Career Win, Blue Jays Fall to Muhlenberg, USMMA

Graduate Student Becomes JHU's 100-Match Winner

ALLENTOWN, PA – Johns Hopkins graduate student Joe Paul (174) went 1-1 on the day to become the third wrestler in Johns Hopkins history to win 100 career matches, but the Blue Jays fell in a pair of Centennial Conference duals to host Muhlenberg (24-16) and the Merchant Marine Academic (29-16).  Johns Hopkins ends the dual meet portion of its 2022-23 schedule with a 6-9 overall record, including a 1-4 mark in the Centennial.

Against the Mules
The Mules secured the eight-point win on the strength of four bonus point wins among their five individual victories.  Wins by fall at 125 and 184 along with a major decision at 141 and a technical fall at 157 were more than the Blue Jays could overcome.

Johns Hopkins got a 19-8 major decision victory from freshman Jake Hoffmann at 165 and wins by decision from Brent Lorin (133), Connor Powell (149), John Libby (197) and Jacob Pomykata (285), but couldn't overcome the four bonus point wins the Mules amassed.

Against the Mariners
The Mariners turned an early 10-0 deficit into a 15-10 lead with four bouts remaining and then answered a pin from Paul at 174 with three straight wins to lock up the 29-16 win (USMMA had one point deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct).

The Blue Jays opened the match with a win by forfeit from Dhilan Patel at 125 and a 15-5 major decision victory for Lorin, but the Mariners answered with four straight wins, including a pin at 141, to grab the 15-10 lead.

Paul stepped to the mat with 99 career wins and needed just 86 seconds to pin Joe Wasilewski to grab career win number 100 and give the Blue Jays a one-point lead.  Back-to-back first-period pins from Daryl Crowley and James Cruz and a 7-1 win at 285 from Reid Garrison put the match the match away for

Notes of Interest
Paul joins Paul Bewak (135 career victories from 2012-15) and Dominick Reyes (110 wins from 2017-22) as the only Johns Hopkins wrestlers to reach the 100-win mark.

What's Next
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, February 11 as the Blue Jays will compete at the 2023 Centennial Conference Championships at Ursinus (10 am).
