Barker, Defense Lead Johns Hopkins to 13-4 Win at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, DC – The 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team held host Georgetown to just one second-half goal en route to a 13-4 win Wednesday afternoon.  The Blue Jays improve to 2-2 on the season while the Hoyas fall to 2-3.
 
Hopkins jumped out to a five-goal lead in a run that spanned just over 17 minutes. Junior Georgie Gorelick scored off the dodge just 99 seconds in to get the Blue Jays on the board. Less than a minute later, senior Madison McPherson cut inside her defender and scored on a sidearm shot.
 
Senior Maeve Barker then buried back-to-back goals off Hoya turnovers and just like that the Blue Jays led 4-0. An Ashley Mackin turnover on the ride, led to a quick counterattack for JHU that ended with Barker scoring from the left alley at 8:45. As the clock ticked under four, freshman Reagan O'Brien sparked another transition with a trail check in the Blue Jays' end. Again, it was Barker that finished, beating a trio of Georgetown defenders to push the lead to four.
 
Gorelick opened the second quarter scoring when she beat Emily Gaven to the right post off the dodge to stake Hopkins to the 5-0 lead. Georgetown rallied with three goals in a span of five and a half minutes to make it a 5-3 game at the half. Barker completed her hat trick at the 9:56-mark of the third when she blew home a free position shot from the right side of the fan.
 
Emma Gebhardt got one back for the Hoyas, when she dodged from behind on scored on a low shot at 5:17. Freshman Ava Angello answered for the Blue Jays just 51 seconds later to spark a seven-goal game-ending run. Junior Jordan Carr converted a free position shot with 45 ticks on the clock and Hopkins led 8-4 after three.
 
Sophomore Alayna Costa split her defenders and scored from in-tight to open the fourth quarter scoring. Just 37 seconds later, sophomore Annie Marshall rifled a free position shot past Leah Warehime. Barker then capped a spurt of three goals in a span of just two minutes and 46 seconds with a scoop-and-score. Junior Campbell Case took a pass from Angello at goal line extended and scored from on the doorstep to push the lead to 12-4 at 8:18. She then capped the scoring with under two minutes to play on a give-and-go with senior Bailey Cheetham.
 
Barker led the Blue Jays with five points and four goals for second five-point game of the season. Case added three points (2g, 1a) while Gorelick (2g) and Angello had (1g, 1a) two-point outings. Cheetham and O'Brien had three caused turnovers each and Angello had a team-best five ground balls. Junior Maggie Tydings finished with eight saves while allowing just the four goals. Gebhardt was the only Hoya with a multi-point game (2g). Nicole Massimino led the defense with three caused turnovers and six ground balls. Gaven and Warehime split time in goal, finishing with five and seven saves respectively.
 
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, March 4 as the Blue Jays travel to Drexel. Opening draw at Vidas Field is slated for 11:00 am.
 
Notes: Hopkins shut out an opponent for a quarter for the first time since April 28, 2022, when the Blue Jays held Penn State scoreless in the fourth quarter • Georgetown's four goals are the fewest by a JHU opponent since holding Towson to three on April 2, 2019.
