ASHLAND, VA – Wisconsin-Whitewater used a pair of free throws in the final five seconds of overtime to defeat the 11
th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team, 83-82, in the NCAA Sweet 16 Friday afternoon.
Trailing by three with 1:07 to play, sophomore
John Windley made a jumper in the paint to slice the deficit to one. After a turnover on the other end, senior
Sidney Thybulle scored on a put-back to stake Hopkins to an 82-81 lead with 12.5 seconds on the clock. Jameer Barker drew a foul on the ensuing possession and made both his shots to swing the lead back to Whitewater with 4.9 to play and that would do it.
This was a close one from the jump as the game featured 18 lead changes and 12 ties and neither team leading by more than eight.
The Warhawks led 15-11 at 12:17 in the first after an Elijah Lambert layup. Windley answered on the other end with a three-pointer to spark a 13-5 Blue Jays' run, capped by a
Carson James driving layup, and it was 24-20 Blue Jays with 3:48 to play. Whitewater answered with a 7-2 spurt, capped by a Barker three-pointer and the Warhawks led 27-26 less than a minute later. The teams traded buckets in the final two and a half minutes and UWW took a 31-30 lead into the half.
Hopkins got a three-pointer from sophomore
Brian Johansson and a Windley jumper, sandwiched around a Delvin Barnstable layup, to take 35-33 lead early in the second. A three-point play from Miles Barnstable ignited a 10-2 run that saw Whitewater go up 45-37 with 16:32 to play. The lead see-sawed up and down over the next three minutes and the Warhawks still led by eight.
Windley drained a jumper in the paint to kick-start a 10-2 run that tied the game at 52 at the 8:50-mark. The teams went back-and-forth for the next six minutes and the Blue Jays led 67-65. A 5-1 JHU spurt pushed its lead to six with 41 seconds left in regulation. Whitewater would close the half with a 9-3 run and forced overtime with a pair of Delvin Barnstable free throws with 0.3 seconds on the clock. The teams traded scores over the first two-and-a-half minutes of overtime and Hopkins led 78-77. Four straight free throws Whitewater up 81-78 with 1:50 to play. Back-to-back buckets from Windley and Thybulle swung the lead back to Hopkins with 12 seconds to play. Barker would then win it for the Warhawks with his two shots from the charity stripe.
Thybulle led the Blue Jays with a career-high 18 points, to go with six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Windley scored 14 and handed out three assists. Yeutter (13) and James (12) also finished in double-digits and James handed out a game-high six assists. Graduate student
Jayden Nixon just missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.
Barker led five Warhawks in double digits with a game-high 19 points, while Delvin Barnstable added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Miles Barnstable finished with 17 points and three assists. Capstran and Trevon Chisolm added 13 points each, while Capstran also grabbed 11 rebounds.
