Melendez Named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

Junior Rang Up Seven Points in 15-11 Win at Michigan

ROSEMONT, IL – Johns Hopkins junior Russell Melendez has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season it was announced today.  Overall, Johns Hopkins has produced the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week three times this season.
 
Melendez tied his career high with four goals and added three assists for a personal-best seven points in a 15-11 win over at Michigan in the Big Ten opener for both teams on Saturday night.  He scored three of his goals and added one assist during a 7-1 Blue Jay run that turned a 9-8 deficit late in the third quarter into a 15-10 lead late in the fourth.  The four-goal effort is his second of the season (Georgetown) and his seven points also better his previous career best as a Blue Jay (4 vs. Georgetown).
 
The four-goal, three-assist showing against the Wolverines boosts Melendez's season totals to 16 goals and nine assists for 25 points.  He ranks third on the team in goals, assists and points and is second in shooting percentage among players who have taken at least 20 shots on the year.  Melendez has 17 points in his last five games (11 g, 6a) and has four multi-goal and six multi-point games to his credit this season.
 
Johns Hopkins (8-3, 1-0 B1G) is currently ranked seventh in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.  The Blue Jays welcome ninth-ranked Rutgers (7-2, 0-1 B1G) to Homewood Field for a key Big Ten game on Saturday, April 1 (3 pm).  The game will air live on ESPNU.
