Blue Jays Dominate Top-Ranked Salisbury, 23-4

JHU Launch Five Homers in Blowout Victory

  • Score: #25 Johns Hopkins- 23, #1 Salisbury- 4
  • Records: JHU (5-0), Salisbury (8-1)
  • Pitching Decision: Gabriel Romano (2-0), Jackson Balzan (2-1)
  • The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins baseball team jumped out to a five-run lead in the top of the first inning and got six shutout innings from Gabriel Romano to rout the top-ranked Seagulls 23-4.

How it Happened

  • The Jays set the tone early in the ballgame as they plated five runs in the top of the first inning. JHU picked up four of their runs with two outs in the inning, with Dillon Souvignier, Jimmy Stevens and Tripp Myers all picking up base hits to drive in runs.
  • Myers added on to his RBI total in the bottom of the third inning when he launched a two-run shot to right field for his first homer of the season. Matthew Cooper would also leave the yard in the next inning to push the Blue Jays lead out to 8-0.
  • The game really got out of hand in the top of the sixth as JHU exploded for six more runs to push the lead out to 16-0. This inning was spurred by a three-run blast from the Blue Jay catcher Caleb Cyr for his second long ball of the season.
  • Two JHU freshmen would launch their first career homers in the final two innings. Jack Vahle, in his first collegiate at bat, smashed one over the right field fence for a three-run blast. Lukas Geer also went yard as he cranked a grand slam in the 9th for his first collegiate homer.
  • Salisbury was able to scratch across four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was far from enough as the Jays came away with a 23-4 dominant victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • After walking the first couple batters he faced, Gabe Romano limited a tough Seagull line up to just five hits and did not allow a run through six innings.
  • In total, five different Blue Jays had multi-hit performances, with Myers, Cooper and Isaiah Winikur picking up three knocks apiece.
  • JHU had five different players hit a home run, which is now a season-high for home runs in a game.

Of Note

  • This win marks the Blue Jays first victory over a number one ranked opponent since 2018 when the defeated #1 Cortland 4-3 • It is the most runs JHU has scored against a nationally ranked opponent since they beat #3 Eastern Connecticut 20-8 in 2010 • This is the fifth time in program history that the Blue Jays have scored 23 runs in a single game, which ties for 19th all-time.
