#4 Johns Hopkins Walks it Off Against Messiah

Ninth Inning Rally Powers Blue Jays Past Falcons, 4-3

  • Score: #4 Johns Hopkins- 4, Messiah- 3
  • Records: JHU (24-3), Messiah (14-15-1)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Nick Jos (1-0), L: Christian Foltz (0-1)
  • The Short Story: With their backs against the wall in the ninth inning the Blue Jays strung hits together in the ninth inning, culminating in a bases loaded walk drawn by Dillon Souvignier to give JHU a thrilling 4-3 come from behind win over Messiah.
How It Happened
  • Jimmy Stevens kicked off the scoring for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the second inning when he smoked a solo home run into left center field to make it 1-0. It was Stevens fourth home run on the season and his second in the last week.
  • JHU tacked on another run in the very next inning to double its lead. Isaiah Winikur reached base on an infield single to kick things off. After Winikur moved over to third on a Messiah error, Matthew Cooper wasted no time driving him in, lashing a single into left field on the first pitch he saw.
  • Ryan Friend got a run back for the Falcons in the top of the fifth, crushing a solo shot over the left field fence. Blue Jays starter Bear Awadzi had to "bear" down with runners on second and third with two outs. Awadzi induced an inning ending ground out to short to get out of the jam.
  • Messiah took their first lead of the game in the next inning when Sam Zercher and Evan Wagaman came across the plate on fielders' choices. The Blue Jays had some tough luck in the field with slowly hit ground balls leading to a couple throwing errors to keep the inning alive for Messiah who took a 3-2 lead.
  • Nick Jos came up big for Johns Hopkins out of the bullpen in the late innings pitching three shut out innings. Jos stranded four base runners and held the deficit at just one run for the Blue Jays heading into the ninth.
  • Stevens got the ball rolling for JHU in the ninth, taking a 3-2 pitch down the left field line to put the tying run in scoring position. A balk allowed Stevens to move up to third base with only one out in the inning. The Blue Jays called on junior catcher Caleb Cyr as a pinch hitter to try and get the job done to tie things. Cyr battled and got his pitch on a 2-2 count and did not miss it, lining it into center field for a game-tying knock to score Stevens. Cyr would be lifted at first for Tripp Myers, who advanced to third on a two-out single from Alex Shane, which put the winning run 90-feet away from scoring. Cooper drew an intentional walk to load the bases for Dillon Souvignier. After falling behind 0-2, Souvignier remained patient and put together the game winning at-bat, drawing a walk on a full-count pitch to earn the walk-off RBI and seal a 4-3 win to get the Blue Jays to 24-3 on the season.
Inside the Box Score
  • Jos' performance on the mound earned him his first victory of his collegiate career. In three appearances this season, Jos has fired six shutout innings, only allowing two hits, and fanning eight batters.
  • Cooper and Stevens both picked up an RBI to get their season totals to 25. They both are tied for second on the team in that category.
  • This game marked the third time the Blue Jays have scored the winning run in the 9th inning or later this year. The last time came against Wooster on March 20th in a 5-4 victory. It was the first walk off RBI of Souvignier's career.
