#6 Johns Hopkins Open Up Conference Season with 2-0 Sweep of Haverford

Strong Starts From Romano and Monterrosa Guide Blue Jays to Wins

BALTIMORE, MD- The #6 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays looked to start the conference schedule off strong, welcoming in Haverford for a Sunday doubleheader to begin their Centennial Conference campaign.

GAME ONE

  • Score: #6 Johns Hopkins- 7, Haverford- 2
  • Records: JHU (19-2, 1-0), Haverford (10-11, 0-1)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Gabe Romano (4-0), Riley Grohowski (3-3)
  • The Short Story: Two key home runs was enough for the Blue Jays offense as they received seven strong innings from graduate student Gabe Romano to earn their first conference win of the season over Haverford.

How It Happened

  • A two out error in the bottom of the first proved to be extremely costly for the Fords. The Blue Jays loaded the bases for Tripp Myers after two walks and an error on a Shawn Steuerer grounder to second. Tripp Myers stepped into the box ready to make Haverford pay for their mistake, launching the first pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam to push JHU to an early 4-0 lead. It was the third grand slam for the Blue Jays so far this season.
  • The Blue Jays would push two more runs across in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Matthew Cooper led things off, belting his team leading seventh homer of the season to left field. Another run was added on a sac fly by Charlie Monterrosa to give the Blue Jays all the offense they would need in the win.
  • Haverford scratched a run across in the fifth after stringing together three straight singles to get on the board. Pranav Rain poked one back up the middle to pick up the RBI knock. Another run would come in the next inning for Haverford. Jack Wallis lined a triple to right field to get on third with one out. Kyle Beach followed that up with a base hit to right field to plate Wallis and made it 7-2.
  • Outside of those two innings, Romano was in control on the mound, racking up a season-high eight strikeouts. Romano completed his longest outing of the year to earn the win.
  • Ben Keever locked things down in the final two innings, punching out two batters and only allowing one hit to close out a 7-2 win for Johns Hopkins.

GAME TWO

  • Score- Johns Hopkins- 8, Haverford- 6
  • Records: JHU (20-2, 2-0), Haverford (10-12, 0-2)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Charlie Monterrosa (4-0), L: Josh Fuller (1-1), S: Hyunwoo Roh (1)
  • The Short Story: JHU slashed 12 hits, giving an early lead to Charlie Monterrosa, who fired seven shutout innings, and held off a ninth inning surge from the Fords to open up the conference schedule with a 2-0 sweep of Haverford.

How It Happened

  • JHU got off to a fast start once again in game two, plating three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. After a single from Isaiah Winikur and walk from Matthew Cooper, Dillon Souvignier lined a double down the right field line to score Winikur. Steuerer followed up with a sac fly to left to make it 2-0. Tripp Myers once again came through with two outs in the first, lining a ball deep to right field that brought in Souvignier to give JHU a 3-0 lead.
  • Isaiah Winikur picked it his second hit in as many innings, although he sent the second one over the left field fence, for his sixth long ball of the season, to give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead.
  • Another crocked number came for Johns Hopkins in the bottom of the sixth as they brought three more runs to the plate. Winkiur and Cooper both picked up base hits with two outs to help spur the big inning.
  • Charlie Monterrosa pitched the longest outing of his young career to earn his fourth win of the year. Monterrosa punched out five Fords in his seven innings and only allowed five base runners in his start.
  • Down by eight, Haverford would not go down quietly in the ninth inning. With the help of the Blue Jays giving up two runs on free passes and two more on a throwing error, Haverford got the tying run on base with two outs in the inning. Hyunwoo Roh settled things down for the Blue Jays, inducing a ground out to third to retire the final Haverford batter and hold on to an 8-6 win and move JHU to 20-2 on the season.

Up Next

  • Johns Hopkins will return to action on Tuesday as they hit the road to take on in-state conference opponent Washington College with first pitch coming at 3:30 pm.
