#4 Johns Hopkins Earn 30th Win in 10-0 Shutout Against McDaniel

Monterrosa Punches Out 10 in Seven Dominant Innings

  • Score: #4 Johns Hopkins- 10, McDaniel- 0
  • Records: JHU (30-3), McDaniel (16-15)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Charlie Monterrosa (5-0), L: Ryan Kelly (2-3)
  • The Short Story: Charlie Monterrosa turned in the most impressive start of his freshman campaign with seven shutout innings, mixed with an offensive surge from the Blue Jays in the later innings gave the Blue Jays a comfortable 10-0 win to get to 30-3 on the season.

How It Happened

  • The first four innings of the game were controlled by the starting pitchers with the two teams only combining for five hits. The deadlock was broken in the top of the fifth when Sam Frank stepped up to the plate. On the first pitch he saw, Frank sent one over the fence to left field to also bring in Shawn Steuerer to get the Blue Jays out to a 2-0 lead.
  • Frank saved one more home run swing for the day as he once again took the first pitch over the wall to left to tack another run onto the Blue Jays lead.
  • Johns Hopkins opened up a comfortable lead in the seventh inning, bringing five runs across the plate to pull ahead 8-0. After two free passes from McDaniel pitching, Alex Shane and Dillon Souvignier moved the runners around with RBI's singles. Steuerer then came up and sent his seventh home run of the season out to left field to complete the outburst.
  • Charlie Monterrosa gave JHU seven dominant innings on the mound, striking out a career-high 10 batters and allowing allowing three hits, all of which came in his first two innings.
  • Isaiah Winikur led the eighth inning with a solo shot down the left field line to give the Blue Jays four homers on the afternoon. Winikur is now tied for second on the team in long balls.
  • Matthew Chang got the Blue Jays to 10 runs with a sacrifice fly in the ninth and Alex Shane tossed two scoreless innings out of the pen to give JHU its fifth shutout win of the season.
