COLLEGE PARK, MD – Host and 10
th-ranked Maryland held off an upset-minded Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team in a tough 13-12 Big Ten contest at SECU Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the B1G, while the Terps improve to 11-3 and 3-0 in the conference.
Maryland scored three straight in a three-minute span to take a 13-11 lead with 4:42 to play.
Maeve Barker ended the Terps' spurt when she took a pass from
Abbey Hurlbrink, tip-toed the crease and scored to pull the Blue Jays back within one with 2:10 left. Hopkins could not find the equalizer however and Maryland took the win.
Charlotte Smith put Hopkins on the board first with a free position goal at the 8:32-mark in the first quarter. Maryland answered with back-to-back goals from Shaylan Ahern and Victoria Hensh to go up 2-1 just 72 seconds later.
Georgie Gorelick and
Bailey Cheetham responded with goals just 40 seconds apart to put JHU up 3-2 with 4:44 left in the quarter. Gorelick slipped inside her defender and beat Emily Sterling with a bouncer to the far post. Cheetham then scored on the run in the left alley off a feed from Smith.
Shannon Smith scored at the 2:29-mark to tie the game at three and spark a 7-1 Maryland run that saw the Terps take a 9-4 lead into the lockerroom.
Jordan Carr broke up the run with the first of her three goals on the day when she batted a loose ball past Sterling at 10:35.
Hopkins came out firing in the third quarter as the Blue Jays outscored the Terps 5-0 to knot the score at nine. Carr got things going when took a pass from Gorelick and scored over her shoulder at 12:21. She then rifled home a free position shot four minutes with 8:46 to play in the quarter. Smith scored on a one-timer while going to the ground 83 seconds later and the lead was down to two.
JHU then capitalized on a failed Maryland clear with a Cheetham goal off the dodge at 4:42.
Abbey Hurlbrink then blew home a sidearm shot from six yards out less than two minutes later and just like that it was a tie game. Libby May scored an advantage goal at the 11:31-mark in the fourth to end a Terps' drought of nearly 19 minutes and put the home team back on top.
Campbell Case and Gorelick responded with back-to-back goals just 26 seconds apart and Hopkins had its first lead since late in the first quarter.
Ahearn drew a free position shot that hit off the left post, then the crossbar and bounced down for the tying goal with 7:41 to play. May then put Maryland on top with her second of the quarter and less than a minute later, Kori Edmondson scored what turned out to be the game-winner with 4:42 to play.
Carr led the Blue Jays with her third career hat trick, while Smith (2g, 1a) and Gorelick (2g, 1a) also had three-point outings.
Haleigh Moore led the defense with a career-high six ground balls to go with a pair of caused turnovers.
Madison McPherson also had two caused turnovers and three draws, while Hurlbrink had a team-high four draws to go with her two points. The third-quarter shutout is the fourth time this season that the Blue Jays have held an opponent scoreless for a quarter.
May, Edmondson and Ahearn had three goals each for the Terps while Chrissy Thomas had a game-high five points (1g, 4a). Ahearn also had eight draws and two caused turnovers.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, April 13 at Michigan. Opening draw at U-M Lacrosse Stadium is slated for 6:00 pm.
